Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle says there is a chance that winger Anthony Elanga has picked up a “long-term” injury.
Speaking before the 4-1 defeat to Leeds United on Monday night, Jaissle revealed that they will know how long the Swedish international will be out for when they receive results from another scan:
“It could be long-term. He will get another MRI next week, and we will see. But for now, it doesn’t look that good.”
Elanga had started all three of the Magpies’ league games prior to the Leeds fixture. Jacob Murphy took his spot in the team at Elland Road.
It’s a big blow for the Newcastle star
Elanga’s first season at St James’ Park was a complete write-off. He utterly failed to justify the £55m spent to bring him in from Nottingham Forest last year, scoring just 3 goals and providing 2 assists in 49 appearances.
However, Jaissle’s arrival in the North East and the subsequent change in playing style benefited the 24-year-old massively. He could use his lightning pace to the fullest extent in a system built around counter-attacking football.
Elanga had found the back of the net twice in 3 Premier League starts, but his revival could now be stopped in its tracks.

Elanga is one of 7 players on the sidelines
The Magpies have several first-team stars unavailable at the moment. Nico Gonzalez was forced off in the first half against Leeds due to a concussion, with Jacob Ramsey also having picked up a thigh injury in the warm-up, adding to Jaissle’s problems.
Will Osula is carrying a troublesome foot injury, while the likes of Dan Burn (ankle), Joelinton (quad) and Ewen Jaouen (ankle) are still out of contention.
