The first international break is upon us and Xabi Alonso has the chance to take a step back on what was a brilliant start as Chelsea manager, only for that to unravel in recent weeks.

Wins against Fulham and Brighton in the league, and beating Luton and Leeds in the Carabao Cup are big positives. Remaining competitive in the Cup is a big plus, with Chelsea still able to fight for silverware.

A competitive loss at Arsenal was positive. But the 2-2 draw against Hull and the 3-0 loss at Brentford however, has sucked the positivity out of Chelsea and now, a long-term problem has reared its ugly head.

Only two Chelsea players in top 100 for distance covered

One of the biggest criticisms of Chelsea last season was the lack of effort made, the lack of distances covered. In 37 of 38 Premier League games, Chelsea were outrun by their Premier League opponents.

The feeling was that under Alonso, that would change. His high intensity, high pressing style of football would get this Chelsea side working hard. Distances would go up and Chelsea would work hard again.

However, the stats prove that is not the case. Just two Chelsea stars are in the top 100 players in the Premier League for distance covered. Morgan Rogers is in 20th place, Cole Palmer sits in 50th position.

Rogers has clocked up 54.9km so far in the Premier League, averaging 11.3km per 90 minutes. Palmer has 51.8km, averaging 10.5km. Everton’s Harrison Armstrong has run the most, clocking up over 60km.

Xabi Alonso must rid Chelsea of this lazy reputation

Last season, clubs felt they could outwork Chelsea and they would get a result – that proved to be the case. Before it gets too bad, Alonso needs to stamp his authority and get players to put egos aside.

Just because they are playing for Chelsea, does not mean results will follow. The defence needs to work a lot harder with Palmer and Rogers clearly working and running a lot harder than their Chelsea teammates.

Yes, there is a case to be had for Chelsea’s rotation, meaning the top 100 only includes players who have played every game. But to have only two in the top 100 means is proof Alonso has not fixed a problem.

When Chelsea return after the international break, Alonso has to have improved two things. The defensive organisation of this Chelsea side, and the work rate. If he can do that, Chelsea will have a positive season.
