Chelsea’s extended international break gives Xabi Alonso an important opportunity to improve an injury situation that contributed to Friday’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford.
Reece James, João Pedro, Moisés Caicedo, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha were all unavailable at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Their absences left Alonso making five changes and handing Jordan Henderson his Chelsea debut as the Blues eventually suffered their heaviest Premier League defeat of the season.
As detailed in ReadChelsea’s Brentford 3-0 Chelsea match report, Chelsea will not play again until Bournemouth visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday 10 October.
That gives the club’s medical staff almost three weeks to improve the picture.
Here is the latest Chelsea injury news heading into the international break.
Reece James recovering from fresh injury
Reece James missed the Brentford defeat after sustaining a problem during Chelsea’s previous game against Hull City.
The captain had already missed part of training before the west London derby and was ultimately not included in the matchday squad.
Xabi Alonso confirmed through Chelsea’s official website that James had picked up a “little injury” against Hull and had been short in his recovery.
Chelsea have not provided a more specific diagnosis.
That makes it important not to attach a firm return date to the defender yet.
James has not been selected by England during the international window, which gives him the opportunity to remain at Cobham and focus on recovery.
The hope will naturally be that he is available when Bournemouth visit Stamford Bridge, but that has not yet been officially confirmed.
João Pedro targets Bournemouth return
João Pedro also missed the trip to Brentford after withdrawing from Brazil’s international squad through injury.
ReadChelsea reported the initial development when João Pedro was forced to pull out of Brazil duty.
Neither Chelsea nor Brazil have publicly confirmed a specific diagnosis.
That means reports describing the problem as a knee injury should currently be treated with caution.
There is, however, encouraging news over his recovery.
Alonso revealed before the Brentford match that Chelsea hope to use the international break to get João Pedro ready for Bournemouth.
“We expect to use the international break for him to be back in the next game against Bournemouth,” Alonso told Chelsea’s official website.
That makes the 10 October fixture the clearest current target among Chelsea’s injured players.
His return would be significant.
João Pedro contributed three goals and three assists across his opening four Premier League appearances before the injury interrupted an excellent start.
Moisés Caicedo continues calf recovery
Moisés Caicedo remains one of Alonso’s biggest fitness concerns.
The midfielder initially missed Chelsea’s opening two league fixtures because of a calf injury.
He returned as a substitute against Brighton but lasted only 14 minutes before suffering a recurrence of the same problem.
Chelsea confirmed that the setback forced the club to adopt a cautious approach rather than risk another premature comeback.
Caicedo trained before Brentford and Alonso said he was getting closer to returning.
However, he was again left out of the squad.
ReadChelsea has been tracking the midfielder’s rehabilitation in our latest Caicedo and Palestra injury update.
The international break now offers Caicedo another extended period to build fitness without Chelsea needing to rush him back.
There is no confirmed Bournemouth return date.
Given what happened against Brighton, the priority must be ensuring his next comeback lasts considerably longer than the previous one.
Marco Palestra closing in on Chelsea debut
Marco Palestra is still waiting to make his competitive Chelsea debut following a quadriceps injury suffered shortly before the Premier League season began.
The summer signing impressed during pre-season but has subsequently missed every competitive fixture.
Alonso previously revealed that the Italian was in the final stages of his recovery.
“If not [fit for] Brentford, then Bournemouth for sure,” the Chelsea head coach said in an official update on Palestra’s fitness.
Palestra ultimately failed to make the Brentford squad.
The international break should therefore provide the final rehabilitation period Alonso hoped would allow him to become available in October.
ReadChelsea covered how Palestra had been pushing to make his debut alongside Henderson before Friday’s game.
Henderson made his return.
Palestra now has Bournemouth as the obvious next target.
Emmanuel Emegha remains unavailable
Emmanuel Emegha is another player still waiting to make his Chelsea debut.
The striker suffered an injury during pre-season after arriving from Strasbourg and has not yet been available to Alonso competitively.
Chelsea had hoped he could potentially return around the Brentford fixture, but he remained absent.
Alonso previously explained that Emegha’s injury disrupted his pre-season and that the club would remain patient while he completed his recovery.
No firm comeback date has been announced.
His progress becomes particularly relevant while João Pedro is also recovering, with Danny Welbeck having started through the middle at Brentford.
Palmer and Lavia available for international duty
There is better news elsewhere in Alonso’s squad.
Cole Palmer is fit enough to join England after starting against Brentford and earning a recall to Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Roméo Lavia is also available.
The midfielder returned to the Chelsea squad before the international break and has now been selected by Belgium.
Jordan Henderson’s injury problems have also eased.
The 36-year-old recovered from the broken arm suffered at the World Cup and made his Chelsea debut against Brentford.
That leaves James, João Pedro, Caicedo, Palestra and Emegha as the main senior fitness situations to monitor during the break.
Chelsea return against Bournemouth on 10 October, and this page will be updated as further training and recovery information emerges.
