Alisson: Why Liverpool ‘winning ugly’ can “bring confidence for the season”

Alisson admitted Liverpool’s 1-0 win away to Bournemouth “wasn’t the cleanest performance,” but the goalkeeper insists it could be one of their most important.

Liverpool were far from their best at Dean Court on Sunday, but came away with the three points after Alexander Isak’s well-taken winner in the second half.

It came with only one big chance for either side, with the Reds missing theirs, and a 46-54 share of possession in a game which neither side dominated.

But speaking to LFCTV post-match, Alisson stressed that the manner of their win can “bring confidence for the rest of the season.”

“Really important. Every Premier League match away from home is tough to play, you have to fight a lot,” the No. 1 explained.

“This afternoon was no different for us. It wasn’t the cleanest performance I think we’ve had.

“But those games, if you don’t play so well and you still win it, keep the clean sheet, I think this brings confidence for the team for the rest of the season as well.”

Alisson has been particularly influential in recent weeks, again showing how vital he is to the side with a world-class save to deny Evanilson at the near post along with a series of strong claims.

“At big clubs you’re not going to have much to do sometimes and then you need to be ready to make one save that can help the team,” he said.

“That’s part of my job, I’m there for it. I’m happy that this afternoon it contributed to the three points and to get the clean sheet.

“But well done to the defenders as well, to the team. It was a really good fight.

“Again, not the cleanest performance, we have to improve a lot on the ball, sometimes without the ball as well.

“But we proved in the second half that’s what you need to do as well, adapt to what the opponents are doing, to the difficulties you have in the match and then fight against it, try to get the result.”

Alisson “really happy” to have Jacquet and Araujo

Liverpool are yet to concede in the Premier League since Andoni Iraola turned to his regular back four of Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkez.

Alisson credited their interventions in front of him at Bournemouth, saying he “would have to work really hard” without it.

“Jeremy played really well, Virgil, the back four, Ronald, Milos, the midfielders as well helped us a lot defensively. Everybody fought a lot,” the 33-year-old continued.

“Jeremy has so much quality of course, but it’s not the hardest job in the world to play alongside Virgil van Dijk!

“Virgil helped him a lot as well, I try to help.

“Ronald as well is someone who came to make us more solid defensively and he’s delivering as well.

“So we are really happy to have them in our side.”
