The Ravens with Lamar Jackson have a history of scoring a lot of points. They also have a history of blowing big leads. And blowing fourth-quarter leads. While they may have made a change at head coach, yesterday continued a familiar pattern. In just his second game as head coach, Jesse Minter’s team blew a fourth-quarter lead.
While he doesn’t ow the Ravens’ past under John Harbaugh, that is their 15th loss over the past six seasons after leading going into the fourth quarter. Even those who are new to the team are aware of it, but they have no control over it. All they can do is work toward the next game.
“Everybody’s going to just say the same old thing of having a lead and things like that”, said Minter, who did spend some time with the Ravens from 2017 through 2020 as an assistant coach, via Jamison Hensley for ESPN. “So man, we will own this. We’ll look in the mirror”.
The Ravens held a one-score, 17-9 lead entering the fourth quarter yesterday against the Saints. New Orleans, however, scored two unanswered touchdowns in the final 10 minutes. With 1:32 to play, QB Tyler Shough scored on 4th and goal from the 1. The play was disputed, but replay upheld the ruling on the field.

The Saints took a risk, going for the touchdown despite the score being tied. A field goal could have put them on top of the Ravens, but it would have given Baltimore a chance to win with a two-minute drive of their own in response. Based on post-game comments, it’s clear some Ravens players and coaches question whether Shough really broke the plane.
The Ravens still had a chance to tie, however, or even win. But the game ended, effectively, with a Lamar Jackson interception with 13 seconds to play. Baltimore reached the Saints’ 37-yard line, facing only second down after spiking the ball, with 20 seconds to play. It was his lone interception of the day, going 21-for-31 for 235 yards with a touchdown pass.
But the Lamar Jackson Ravens aren’t supposed to score just 17 points in the first place. It was a game of few possessions—they had just eight overall, scoring on three and missing a field goal on another with three punts and one turnover. On four of their first five drives, they drove the ball at least 50 yards. They reached field goal range on each series, but came away with just 17 points for their effort. And outside of the final possession, they didn’t even get out of their own 40 on the others. But the past is the past, and that now includes yesterday.
“Our history is irrelevant to the future of where we want to go”, said Calais Campbell, who returned to the Ravens this offseason after previously playing for them from 2020 through 2022. “It just comes down to how we respond and our execution going forward”.
Of course, it also came down to how they respond the other 14 times they blew a fourth-quarter lead, too.
