Jets Suffer Extremely Unique Loss That Broke a Streak That Began in 1941 1
The New York Jets were so close to Week 2 glory on Sunday, but they ended up fumbling their chance to start the 2026 NFL season with a 2-0 record.
Geno Smith and the Jets ultimately suffered a 20-17 overtime loss to the visiting Green Bay Packers at MetLife Stadium, as Jordan Love and company spoiled New York’s season home debut. In Week 1, New York defeated the Tennessee Titans on the road, 23-10.
The defeat at the hands of Green Bay was a tough one to swallow for the home team.
The Packers kept shooting themselves in their own foot with penalties and poor execution on offense, but they somehow found a way to upend New York.
For New York, its loss was a historically unique one.
Via Rich Cimini of ESPN:
How did the Jets lose this game?
They became the first team on record (since 1941) to lose a game with …
* Holding opponent to less than 200 yds (199)
* Opponent having 100+ penalty yds (133)
* Positive turnover margin (+1)
Entering today, teams were 44-0 in that spot.

Understandably, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn was unhappy with the game’s result.
“I’ll be honest, I’m highly upset,” Glenn said, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). “Tough way to lose a game. There’s a number of things that go through my head that, man, we have to fix. … This loss is not going to define who we are and what we’re about, I will say that. It’s not OK and our guys are going to take it like that.”
Smith passed for 247 yards and a touchdown on 27/41 completions for the Jets, who will look to bounce back in Week 3 against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field in Detroit.
