Chelsea move for Melvin Gomes appears to be over, as per latest transfer news. The 18-year-old defender has chosen to stay with Monaco, despite interest and a contract offer from the Blues. He is set to take another step in familiar surroundings.
Chelsea miss out on Melvin Gomes
As reported by Sport Witness, Chelsea showed strong interest in Gomes and contacted the defender with a contract offer. However, he was not open to a move to Stamford Bridge. The report says he is now on the verge of signing his first professional deal with Monaco. That deal is expected to run for three years. The France youth international is expected to continue with Monaco’s Groupe Elite soon.
The report says his new deal should be made official in the coming days. It also notes that the French side has a clear route from its academy to the senior team. For Chelsea, this is another missed chance to add a young player with high potential. The Blues have a record of looking at young talent, and Gomes had become one of the defenders on their radar. This time, the player appears ready to keep building his career in France.
A defender shaped by Monaco
Gomes joined Monaco in 2023 after leaving SC Air Bel in Marseille as a free agent. He was born in Marseille in 2008 and has grown through the club’s youth system over the last three years. The 18-year-old first played for the Under-17 side. He made 26 appearances there during the 2024-25 season. He then moved up to the Under-19 group, where he played 19 matches last season. Earlier this summer, he stepped up to the Monaco Under-21 setup.
Gomes is mainly a centre-back, but he can also play at right-back. That gives him value as he works towards senior football. He has also represented France at Under-18 and Under-19 level. L’Equipe describes Gomes as a player with high potential in the youth market. His progress has been followed by Chelsea, but the youngster now looks set to continue that rise with Monaco.
Monaco pathway wins again
Gomes is set to reject the Premier League side’s interest and extend his stay with Monaco. The report fits with the wider picture around the defender, who has spent the early years of his development in the Principality. Staying in France means Gomes can keep working in a setting he knows. He understands the training system, staff and demands around him. More importantly, he can keep pushing for a place closer to the first team.
Gomes is expected to sign a three-year professional contract. Soon, he will continue with the Groupe Elite, while Monaco’s system is designed to give young players a path towards senior football. The decision also comes after a transfer story between the two clubs. Chelsea had reached an agreement in principle with Monaco for midfielder Lamine Camara, but that move did not happen before the deadline.
Author’s Opinion
Melvin Gomes is still at the start of his senior career. Staying at Monaco gives him time to grow in a familiar setup. Chelsea’s interest shows his progress, but regular development may matter more than making a big move too early.
