Former first-round pick Caleb Williams suffered a severe hamstring injury in Week Two’s loss, and backup Tyson Bagent could play a new role in the latest Chicago Bears rumors. Williams went on a red-zone scramble but fell awkwardly. As of this posting, it’s unknown how long the former first-rounder will be out, though he’s expected to miss up to eight weeks. If it’s severe, former undrafted product Bagent is prepared to start next week. The former Shepherd product came into the upcoming season as an active trade candidate.
Luckily for Chicago, the team re-signed the backup to a two-year extension in 2024, and isn’t interested in trading the signal-caller despite receiving multiple calls. Chicago fans can sigh of relief, but expect the undrafted product to raise his trade value next offseason. The backup has proven to be a reliable starter, filling in for former starter Justin Fields. Although he showcased some inconsistency and limited arm ability, the QB still maintained a 2-2 starter record.

Like the San Francisco 49ers’ backup Mac Jones, the Bears backup QB hopes to become a permanent starter even if it’s elsewhere. He’s already established as a reliable anchor for a superstar QB, like Williams, who could step in and win ball games.
It’ll be interesting to see how the QB adapts. After all, he will be only 27-years-old next offseason, and could seek a trade.
Meanwhile, expect Williams to remain the franchiser. Time will reveal if the Bears are interested in a trade, but they will probably discuss it after the 2026 season. Assuming Bagent has a phenomenal campaign, these five teams could wait for the right moment to strike a trade.
