Having arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116 million following a maiden World Cup campaign with England, Anderson has immediately established himself as an indispensable presence at the heart of the side, helping the Blues maintain a flawless start to the 2026/27 campaign.
Now, in an expansive interview on the Official Man City Podcast, the 23-year-old has opened up on his humble footballing roots, the influence of his family and what it means to be at the forefront of City’s latest chapter.
Excitement for Maresca’s ‘New Era’
Thanks to the departures of four senior midfielders including Rodri and Bernardo Silva, Anderson has shouldered substantial responsibility, anchoring the midfield with poise and maturity through the opening weeks of the season.
Rather than being fazed by the scale of turnover in east Manchester, Anderson sees the overhaul as a huge opportunity for a club accustomed to competing at the summit.
“I think it’s very exciting,” Anderson said of the rebuild under Maresca. “Obviously there’s been big change and a new manager, a lot of players that have left, a new era as you could say, but every era has started like this and this is hopefully the start of a new one.”

Anderson: It’s Surreal to Be Playing Here Now
Coming through the ranks at Newcastle United after starting out at renowned grassroots outfit Wallsend Boys Club, Anderson faced City’s youth sides on multiple occasions. Reflecting on those encounters, the midfielder revealed just how formidable an impression those trips to Manchester left on him as an aspiring professional.
“It was funny because I was talking to my dad the other day as I used to come down here at probably U14s/U15s,” Anderson said.
“I would remember coming down here and we’d just get pumped every time 10-0, 8-0, 9-0 and it was always quite tough because I’d go back up to Newcastle and I’d be thinking I’m miles away and all these players are so good.
“I always used to think it would be so good playing for that team and winning those games and stuff and it’s quite strange because I’m here now and playing for the first team which is quite surreal.”
Of course, by the time Anderson was playing regular football as a teenager, City already had one of the most respected and productive academies in the world and were enjoying competitive success in a wide range of age groups.
Grounded by Family
Anderson broke through into Newcastle’s senior setup at 18, making his first-team bow against Arsenal in the FA Cup, before eventually making his mark in the Premier League. The midfielder credits his family - in particular his grandfather - for instilling the work ethic required to reach the top.
“It was amazing,” he said of following in his family's footsteps. “The best piece of advice was what my grandad gave me. Obviously my dad and my mum would have done as well, but he just used to say, ‘The hard work that you’re putting in’ - and I know everyone seems to say it but it’s so true.
“I think every session I had I would work my hardest. I would make sure that I hadn’t wasted a day in trying to get better and fitter and just putting me in the best place to be a professional footballer really.”
Having gone from chasing shadows against City's academy sides to dictating tempos under Maresca, Anderson looks completely unburdened by his price tag or the weight of expectation. If his early performances are anything to go by, the 23-year-old is in a great position to remain the driving force behind City’s next generation of success.
