TalkSPORT pundit and ex-Rangers manager/player Ally McCoist thinks his former club could sign Arsenal starlet Max Dowman on loan.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has hinted that the 16-year-old could be allowed to leave the Emirates on a temporary basis in the future to aid his development.

When McCoist was asked whether a move north of the border could suit Dowman, he replied:

“I would take him, 100 per cent I’d take him at Ibrox I would [loan him out]. I wouldn’t have a problem with it if Mikel Arteta thought it was the best thing for his development.”

“A conversation before about, I remember, Phil Foden. I thought it had been the right thing for him to go out.”

“It wasn’t because Pep Guardiola kept him, and then he went on to have a fantastic period after that. So, I can understand the pros and cons of both, but I would not have a problem. I would be okay for him to go and get some serious game time.”

What did Arteta say about Dowman’s future?

The teenager has only started one game so far this season, and he made a big impact, scoring a brace in the 4-2 win over Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup.

Dowman did play the last 10 minutes of the 3-0 defeat to Brighton at the weekend, but when asked about how the club will manage his game time, Arteta said:

“We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do, and then make the right decision. It depends on a lot of factors. What he needs, and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes.”

“We have to be open, but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team. We haven’t really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have Max in the squad, that we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there.”

Could Arsenal loan him out in January?

A lot will depend on how the team performs over the next few months. His two favoured positions are No.10 and the right wing, and he will face issues getting game time with the likes of Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke also competing for starts.

If those players underperform, then Dowman may get more opportunities. Otherwise, he could be limited to minutes in the Carabao Cup, off the bench in the league and Champions League, as well as the FA Cup in January.

For that reason, a loan may be considered if he doesn’t move ahead of others in the pecking order. It seems unlikely, though, that he would join Rangers. The Scottish Premiership is arguably weaker than the English Championship, and there would be a whole host of Premier League sides and clubs on the continent pursuing him if he is available.
