Alisson remains Liverpool’s No. 1 goalkeeper but, at 33, is into the final year of his contract – however no decision has been made yet over his future at the club.

Having seen a proposed move to Juventus fall through over the summer, Alisson has reinforced his status as one of the best goalkeepers in the world this season.

Despite turning 34 next month, he has returned to form in the opening weeks of this campaign after a difficult season last time around.

That has led to hopes he could in fact stay at Liverpool beyond his current deal, which expires in 2027, particularly as doubts linger of Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Speaking on The Athletic’s Walk On podcast, journalist James Pearce explained that sources indicate it is “just too soon on all sides” to know whether Alisson will extend his contract.

He had been open to a move away in the summer but the understanding is that, with other leaders such as Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah departing, it was seen as a loss the Reds could not absorb.

“Is he going to still be around next season? We don’t know that at the moment,” Pearce said.

“From what I’ve been told, it’s just too soon on all sides. There’s not been those talks yet.”

The ideal scenario would likely be Liverpool negotiating a new deal with Alisson, who could remain as No. 1 while £30 million signing Lucca Brughmans adjusts to life on Merseyside after a final season on loan at Genk.

Of course, that would see Mamardashvili become surplus to requirements, with Pearce highlighting the difficult situation around the Georgian.

New Alisson contract would almost certainly lead to Mamardashvili exit

“If Alisson does stay, Mamardashvili isn’t going to tolerate being backup for a third successive season,” he continued.

“So if Alisson stays, that probably means that Mamardashvili goes, and then they’ve invested a lot of money in this young Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans.

“Then you’ve got [Vitezslav] Jaros, he’ll be back in a few months, they’ve got Armin Pecsi who’s out on loan in Austria at the moment.

“I get the feeling that they’re quite happy with what they’ve got further down the line in terms of five, six, seven years’ time, but the immediate future is really uncertain.”

Alisson is one of five senior players whose contracts expire in the summer, along with captain Virgil van Dijk, fellow vice-captain Joe Gomez and squad options Wataru Endo and Kostas Tsimikas.
