Dak Prescott did more than lead the Dallas Cowboys to their first victory of the season Sunday. He placed his name above every quarterback in franchise history in one of the position’s most important categories.
Prescott threw four touchdown passes during Dallas’ 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders, increasing his career total to 249. That moved him past Tony Romo, who finished his Cowboys career with 248.
“I’m blessed, honored,” Prescott said in a postgame interview published by the Cowboys. “Records are meant to be broken. This is my time to break this one.”
Prescott also made it clear that he does not view the record as a finish line.
“It’s just the beginning,” he said. “I want to double it and plan to play for a while, so just getting started.”
He looked capable of doing exactly that against Washington.
Prescott completed 26 of 31 passes for 279 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. His 143.8 passer rating reflected an afternoon in which Dallas controlled the game through efficiency rather than overwhelming passing volume. CeeDee Lamb caught eight passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Ferguson caught Prescott’s other two scoring passes.
Prescott and Lamb make Cowboys history together
Prescott’s record-breaking touchdown fittingly went to Lamb, the receiver who has caught more of his scoring passes than any other player. Lamb’s second touchdown of the afternoon became the 37th score produced by the partnership.
“It wasn’t a great ball,” Prescott joked when discussing the play. “I just saw it was one-on-one. I put it out there like, ‘CeeDee, please, just get this over with.’”
Lamb did exactly that, securing the pass and giving Prescott the record without requiring a perfect throw. Prescott wore a Roger Staubach jersey during his postgame press conference, offering a visual reminder of the Cowboys quarterback tradition he had just joined.
Staubach threw 153 touchdown passes for Dallas. Danny White finished with 155, Troy Aikman had 165 and Romo held the previous record with 248. Prescott now stands first with 249.
The official Cowboys game recap also noted that Prescott recorded his 79th career game with multiple touchdown passes, tying another franchise mark previously held by Romo. Dallas improved to 1-1 and avoided falling into an early two-game hole in the NFC East.

Prescott’s milestone comes with larger expectations
Prescott’s regular-season resume in Dallas is already substantial. The next stage of his legacy will continue to be measured by what the Cowboys accomplish in January, but that reality should not diminish Sunday’s achievement.
Passing every quarterback who has played for one of the NFL’s most visible franchises requires durability, production and the ability to operate under constant scrutiny.
Prescott has supplied all three.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones credited the quarterback’s work ethic after the game, saying Prescott makes his success look easier than it is.
The afternoon also included a troubling development for Washington. Quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a dislocated left elbow late in the second quarter. Initial testing did not reveal a fracture.
Dallas still had to finish the job, and Prescott made sure it did. The Cowboys needed a stabilizing performance after losing their opener. They received one from a quarterback who delivered four touchdowns, protected the football and walked away as the franchise’s career leader.
Prescott called the accomplishment humbling. For Dallas, the more exciting part may have been his insistence that he is only getting started.
