AnEverton matchday steward is leading a campaign to illuminate Liverpool landmarks pink for Organ Donation Week in memory of his 17-year-old daughter Megan, whose organs helped to save five lives.
David Hilton, who has worked as a steward at Goodison Park and the Hill Dickinson for 16 years, lost his daughter after she suffered a sudden brain aneurysm last July.
Megan, who hoped to become a paediatric nurse, had ticked the organ donation box when applying for her provisional driving licence only weeks before her death. She had also made sure her parents knew what she wanted.
Hill Dickinson to light up pink for Organ Donation Week
The Hill Dickinson will be illuminated pink on Monday night alongside the Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Wallasey Town Hall as Organ Donation Week begins across the UK.
Speaking to Everton’s official website, David explained why the family’s campaign is focused not only on registering as an organ donor, but also discussing that decision with loved ones.
“It’s one thing signing up to donate organs, but it’s so, so important to also let your loved ones know,” he said.

Figures from NHS Blood and Transplant cited by Everton show that more than 8,600 people are currently waiting for a transplant, with nine people dying each week while waiting.
Everton also report that families agree to donation in around 90 per cent of cases when they know what their loved one wanted. That falls below 50 per cent when they are unsure.
David, his wife Claire and Megan’s 14-year-old sister Isabella are now trying to encourage more families to have that conversation.
“She was very kind,” David said. “Even at such a young age, she really cared and wanted to help other people.”
Organ Donation Week runs from 21-27 September. People can confirm their decision through the NHS Organ Donor Register or the NHS app.
