Florian Wirtz has taken to Instagram following Liverpool’s win over AFC Bournemouth. Alexander Isak’s second half strike earned the Reds’ a 1-0 victory over the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium, with the German loosely involved in the build-up as he made an initial attempt to get on the end of Cody Gakpo’s low cross.
The playmaker was withdrawn in the 71st minute though after a below-par display, with Trey Nyoni sent on in his place.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was highly-critical of Wirtz while on commentary duties down on the South coast and again when speaking on his post-match Sky Sports podcast.
In contrast, Reds head coach Andoni Iraola would defend the 23-year-old’s performance, though he admitted Wirtz had started slowly against Bournemouth.
The German has been the subject of increased scrutiny for club and country since first moving to Liverpool in an £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
Criticism of his performances back in his homeland only increased following Germany’s premature exit from the World Cup, while he has recorded just one assist from six appearances so far this season for the Reds.
Club football now goes on a three-week hiatus for the extended September/October international break, following Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth, with Wirtz named in the second of two separate squads selected by his new national team manager, Jurgen Klopp - who has also hit back at criticism of the midfielder.
And ahead of the international break, the 23-year-old took to social media to react to the Reds’ latest victory.
Sharing a picture of himself taking a shot at the Vitality Stadium on his Instagram story, he wrote: “Into the international break with a win”, with the message accompanied by flexed biceps and flame emojis.
Wirtz will now link up with Germany at the end of the month ahead of their third and fourth Nations League games as they host Serbia before travelling to Greece.
Consequently, he will be spared travelling to the Netherlands and hosting Greece with Klopp’s squad instead involved for Germany’s first two Nations League games.
The former Liverpool boss’ decision to split his squad will no doubt go down well at Anfield, with Wirtz not overworked on international duty ahead of returning to club action with the Reds’ next fixture seeing them host Premier League league-leaders Man City on October 11.
