Aiden McGeady identifies Everton concern despite unbeaten start under David Moyes

FormerEverton winger Aiden McGeady believes David Moyes’ squad is “pretty light” despite the Blues reaching the international break without a defeat.

Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town extended Everton’s unbeaten start to seven matches in all competitions. Moyes’ side have won four and drawn three, conceding only three goals and keeping five clean sheets.

McGeady asks where Everton goals will come from

Everton’s squad was effectively cut during the closing stages of the summer transfer window. Iliman Ndiaye, Beto, Tim Iroegbunam and Nathan Patterson were sold, while Adam Aznou left on loan. The proposed £40m signing of Monaco striker Folarin Balogun then fell through before the deadline.

That left Moyes with 18 senior outfield players, with injuries to Merlin Rohl and Christian Norgaard further reducing his options during September. Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, McGeady said:

“It’s going to be difficult, the squad is pretty light. I think everybody would agree with that, I think that goes without saying.”

Everton’s defensive record has been excellent. They have conceded three times in seven games and have kept three consecutive clean sheets against Tottenham, Wolves and Ipswich. McGeady, who played under Moyes during his time at Everton, believes the bigger issue could be at the other end.

“Keeping clean sheets is David Moyes’ mantra. It’s been his whole career, hasn’t it? Most of his teams have always been difficult to beat. But yeah, that’s the problem, where are the majority of goals going to come from?”

Everton have scored six goals in their opening five Premier League matches. Thierno Barry has two of them and leads the club with five in all competitions. McGeady also picked out Jack Grealish following Ndiaye’s departure.

“They’re a little bit light on creativity and Jack Grealish is one that fits the bill. He’s really important for the team because I think a lot of the fans were really unhappy with how the transfer window ended.”

Moyes had wanted another striker before the deadline, but the Balogun deal did not go through.

“Moyes would have liked a striker in as well, like Folarin Balogun, which never happened. But hopefully come January they’ll get some reinforcements in.”

Everton return from the international break against Hull City on 11 October with nine points from five Premier League games.
