The future of Alexis Mac Allister at Liverpool has been one of the club’s most closely watched storylines this season.
The Argentine midfielder’s contract situation dominated headlines after he opened up publicly, and the timing added extra intrigue given it came just before a major European fixture at Anfield.
His comments arrived during an emotionally charged week, one that also saw him respond on the pitch in dramatic fashion.
Team-mates Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai had both signed contract extensions in recent months, a contrast that was not lost on Mac Allister or those covering the club.
Speaking again on the subject, this time in more measured terms, Mac Allister addressed the reaction to his earlier remarks and set out where things currently stand between him and Liverpool.
According to SportsCenter ESPN, Mac Allister said: “There isn’t a final decision set in stone. The reality is that I still have two years left on my contract.”
He went on to explain the context behind his original comments.
“In that press conference, because people were asking me about my future, I spoke purely from emotion. I wasn’t judging the club or anything like that, in the end, they are the ones who run things and make the decisions, which is completely fine by me.”
Mac Allister reaffirmed his commitment to the club regardless of the uncertainty.
“Like I said, I’m going to give my absolute best. I have two years left, and a lot can happen in two years, there are plenty of possibilities.”
He also spoke about his personal outlook.
“From my side, I really enjoy being where I am. Hopefully, I’ll stay for more years, but if it ends up being just two, that’s fine too. I want to enjoy this time with my family because I have no doubt that this is one of the best clubs in the world.”
The 27-year-old’s contract at Anfield runs until June 2028. He joined Liverpool from Brighton in the summer of 2023 in a deal reported at £35 million, and has gone on to make more than 150 appearances for the club, including during a Premier League title-winning campaign in 2024-25.
Mac Allister’s initial comments on his contract came at a press conference ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid, where he said he had been left “very, very sad” after learning the club would not offer him a new deal.
He also confirmed he had turned down opportunities to leave during the summer transfer window, with Manchester City and Real Madrid among the clubs previously linked with him.
A day after those comments, Mac Allister scored the winning goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Atletico at Anfield, firing home from outside the box five minutes into the second half to complete a comeback after Marcos Llorente had given the visitors an early lead in the 17th minute.
Head coach Andoni Iraola addressed the situation at the time, saying there was “still a lot of time to talk about these contract situations” and praising Mac Allister’s importance to the team.
For now, Mac Allister’s position remains as it was when his deal was signed: two years still to run, no fresh terms agreed, and no indication from either side that a resolution is imminent.
