'A bit carried away...' - Jamie Carragher apologises for comments made about Liverpool star v…

Jamie Carragher

It's the start of a new era at Liverpool. Arne Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp, won the Premier League, then endured a torrid second season, and was ultimately sacked.

In his place, Andoni Iraola has come in to take charge at Anfield. It's been a mixed start for the Spaniard so far, but the Reds are unbeaten in the Premier League with two wins and three draws from their opening five fixtures.

The latest outing came against Bournemouth, as Iraola oversaw a 1-0 win against his former team. Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the game, but pundit and club legend Jamie Carragher has been discussing another player.

Carragher was working for Sky Sports covering the game over the weekend, and offered an on-air apology to viewers after his comments made about Jeremy Jacquet. Unusually, though, he was concerned that he might have been raving about the young Frenchman a little too much.

He had been impressed with the young defender against the Cherries, and was blown away after the Frenchman made a vital interception during the second half, not long after Liverpool had taken the lead.

"Brilliant again, Jacquet," Carragher said, as quoted by the Express. He then quickly issued an apology, noting:

Carragher wasn't the only one who was impressed by Jacquet's efforts for the club since arriving from Rennes. Captain Virgil van Dijk said after the match: "I think he has showed a lot of good things so far this season."

Jacquet was full of praise for his new centre-back partner, as well, noting: "It is big for me to play with Virgil. I can learn a lot from him. I'm very happy, I play with a lot of very good players so for me I just enjoy it."

Carragher wasn't happy with the efforts of every player in the Liverpool win, however, as he spoke about his concerns with Florian Wirtz. The German is yet to really show his best for the club since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025.

After the win vs Bournemouth, the English pundit said: "That was one of the poorest I've ever seen him in a Liverpool shirt. I've been critical of the fact that he hasn't got the numbers. But normally when you watch Wirtz, he's neat and tidy, he keeps possession, there's things that you like. He gets out of a tight situation where you're normally expecting your player to lose the ball.

"But the reason I worry is, I don't think Wirtz is in poor form since he came to Liverpool. I actually think what we're seeing is what he is. And I was worried for Wirtz probably 12 months ago.

"And maybe that was a little bit early to say that, but I didn't say it. It was just in the back of my head."

He then claimed he couldn't see how Wirtz is 'going to hurt' the opposition, claiming that his performances are closer to a player who should have cost half the £116m fee. He concluded:

"Where we were expecting him was to take Liverpool to another league title, to take Liverpool to a Champions League. The gap he's got to get to almost justify what people were expecting, I almost think is too big. You can't get there.

"Even if he improves a bit and gets there, it's still not what Liverpool thought they were getting."
