Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has offered some additional context to his recent comments about his contract situation, with two more years left to run on his existing deal.

‌

Mac Allister stated earlier this month, ahead of Liverpool taking on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, that he felt "sad" not to have been offered an extension at Anfield, when teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch had been.

‌

But the 27-year-old, who was signed from Brighton in 2023, says nothing has been decided yet, and he remains very happy at Anfield, where he has started the new season in excellent form.

"There isn’t a final decision set in stone," Mac Allister told ESPN. "The reality is that I still have two years left on my contract.

"In that press conference, because people were asking me about my future, I spoke purely from emotion. I wasn’t judging the club or anything like that.

"In the end, they are the ones who run things and make the decisions, which is completely fine by me.

"Like I said, I’m going to give my absolute best. I have two years left. A lot can happen in two years; there are plenty of possibilities.

"From my side, I really enjoy being where I am. Hopefully, I’ll stay for more years, but if it ends up being just two, that’s fine too.

"I want to enjoy this time with my family because I have no doubt that this is one of the best clubs in the world."

Argentina will take on Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin during the international break. Liverpool then returns to Premier League action with a game against Manchester City on October 11.

Liverpool.com says: Mac Allister looks back to his best again this term, and he was solid again this weekend at Bournemouth, but he will be approaching 30 by the time his existing contract runs down.

Quite simply, there are very few players who have signed extensions beyond that point, with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk the exceptions rather than the rule.

It would take a sustained period of exceptional form for him to be handed a new deal. Last season, when the younger midfielders Szoboszlai and Gravenberch got extensions, he was really toiling.
