Al Ahli interested in signing£70million Arsenal star in January

A striker who cost a club record fee is always one quiet month away from a rumour. The first international break of a new season is when those lists get written, especially if the player who started as the number nine is no longer first in the queue.

That does not mean a deal is close. It means other clubs have noticed the minutes and the goals have not arrived together.

January is still months away. Four competitions, though, tend to keep every forward on the books until a manager decides otherwise.

The Standard, reports that Juventus, AC Milan, Al Ahli and Al Ittihad are interested in Viktor Gyokeres. The Sweden striker has not scored in five appearances before the international break and has slipped behind Kai Havertz in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order.

Gyokeres joined Arsenal from Sporting CP just over a year ago in a £64million deal. His start to this campaign has been unconvincing by the standard that fee demands.

Juventus are short of a leading centre-forward after Jonathan David moved to Atletico Madrid. A move to Milan would reunite him with Ruben Amorim. Al Ahli already have Ivan Toney. Al Ittihad have not replaced Karim Benzema.

None of that is an offer. The Standard says it is unclear whether Arsenal would sanction a loan or a sale in January or next summer, and unclear whether Gyokeres wants to leave.

He remains an Arsenal player at least until the winter window. Arteta’s side are in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, so minutes should still be there even if Havertz starts the league games.

Sweden give him a different stage first. Graham Potter’s side face Romania twice in this break, with Nations League matches against Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina in between.

A run of international goals would change the conversation faster than a rumour from Italy or Saudi Arabia. A continued blank would keep the same clubs circling.

For Arsenal the decision is not urgent. Selling a £64million striker after five goalless club games would be an admission, not a tidy piece of business. Keeping him and using the extra fixtures is the simpler path until January forces a choice.

The interest is real enough to print. A departure is not. Gyokeres goes away with Sweden, comes back for Leeds on 10 October, and the pecking order stays with Arteta until the next window opens.
