Liverpool go into the international break unbeaten after a 1-0 win at Bournemouth on Sunday. Alexander Isak scored the only goal in the 57th minute.
The win lifted Liverpool to sixth in the Premier League. They sit six points behind leaders Manchester City, and Andoni Iraola’s side remain unbeaten in all competitions.
Iraola led Bournemouth into Europe for the first time in the club’s history before Liverpool signed him, and he received a warm reception at the Vitality Stadium.
Liverpool do not play again until Sunday, October 11, when they host Manchester City at Anfield.
The start also carries historical weight.
According to Opta, Andoni Iraola is the first manager to stay unbeaten through his first five league games in charge of Liverpool since Joe Fagan in September 1983. He has won two and drawn three.
Fagan was promoted from the coaching staff after Bob Paisley retired. In his first season, he won the league title, the European Cup and the League Cup.
Liverpool drew 2-2 at Newcastle, drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest at Anfield and won 2-0 at Ipswich. They then drew 0-0 with Fulham at Anfield before the win at Bournemouth. That is nine points from a possible 15.
Isak scored both goals at Ipswich. He has four Premier League goals this season, already more than the three he scored in 14 league appearances last term.
Liverpool have kept three consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time since September 2024.
Andoni Iraola said he was unhappy with the first half at Bournemouth. He said the hosts pressed hard early and Liverpool lost too many duels, but the team improved after the break.
Liverpool also beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield in their Champions League opener, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring the winner. They beat Tottenham 3-1 at home in the Carabao Cup third round on September 15.
Liverpool are still waiting for a league win at Anfield this season, after the draws with Forest and Fulham.
Florian Wirtz struggled again at Bournemouth, though Iraola said he was happier with his second-half display. Bradley Barcola is still waiting for his first goal or assist for the club.
City have won all five of their league matches this season.
