Mike Vrabel’s Attempt to Fix an Officials Mistake Created an Even Bigger Problem 1
Mike Vrabel was already frustrated with the officials when the situation got out of hand.
The New England Patriots head coach was trying to correct what he believed was a clock-management mistake after an injury timeout late in the first half. Instead, Vrabel’s decision created a delay-of-game penalty and left him owning another mistake of his own.

The situation came down to timing. Vrabel believed that the officials should have been winding the clock after the injury timeout; however, that was not how things played out. He was focused on getting that decision corrected while also trying to figure out what the Pittsburgh Steelers defense was showing.
That led to the unusual sequence: Vrabel called a second timeout before the Patriots could run the next play. Looking back on it, he did not try to shift the blame.
“I blew it. Injury timeout, I was all caught up on the fact that they should have been winding that play, which I don’t understand why they weren’t… In my haste to try to correct the officials — the injury timeout under two goes on us, and then we were going to see what they were in, and then call a timeout. I blew it.”

There is plenty packed into that explanation. Vrabel was not simply calling timeouts without a plan but wanted to see what the Steelers were showing before using the timeout. The problem was that he got caught up in the clock situation first.
By the time he tried to straighten everything out, the Patriots had created another issue for themselves. The admission also fits with the way the Patriots HC has discussed mistakes throughout his tenure. He didn’t pretend the officials were solely responsible for what happened; however, he acknowledged that his reaction to the situation made things worse.
That distinction matters. Coaches will inevitably disagree with officiating decisions during games. The harder part is making sure that frustration does not spill into the next decision. In this case, Vrabel’s attempt to fix one perceived problem directly contributed to another.
It was an especially awkward sequence because the Patriots were trying to manage the final moments of the half and make the most of their possession. The 51-year-old explanation doesn’t erase the officials’ part of the sequence from his perspective. He still clearly believes the clock should have been handled differently after the injury; however, he also understands that the Patriots had control over what happened next.
For a coach, that is about as direct an answer as one gets. There was no long defense of the decision and no attempt to make the penalty disappear behind the officiating controversy. The Patriots will have plenty of other decisions to make as the season continues. Vrabel’s latest one simply serves as a reminder of how quickly a coach trying to clean up one problem can create another.
