Alexis Mac Allister has played down the headlines after a “very sad” admission over his Liverpool contract, insisting there has been no “final decision” made.

Mac Allister used his press conference ahead of the Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid to express his sadness at not being offered a new contract.

Despite Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai receiving new long-term deals earlier this year, the Argentine was informed that there would be no offer as it stands.

But speaking to ESPN after arriving for international duty this week, Mac Allister cleared up the situation around his contract.

“There isn’t a final decision set in stone. The reality is that I still have two years left on my contract,” he said, as translated by @AlbicelesteTalk on X.

“In that press conference, because people were asking me about my future, I spoke purely from emotion.

“I wasn’t judging the club or anything like that.

“In the end, they are the ones who run things and make the decisions, which is completely fine by me.”

Mac Allister endured a difficult season under Arne Slot last time out, but has so far been revitalised after a change in the dugout and a run to the World Cup final with Argentina.

The 27-year-old has cemented himself as a first-choice starter over Gravenberch, scoring two goals and assisting another in seven appearances for Andoni Iraola.

There is still a chance he earns an extension to his current deal, as despite those terms taking him beyond his 29th birthday, Liverpool have shown they are willing to negotiate new contracts with players nearing or into their 30s.

“Like I said, I’m going to give my absolute best,” Mac Allister vowed.

“I have two years left, and a lot can happen in two years, there are plenty of possibilities.

“From my side, I really enjoy being where I am. Hopefully, I’ll stay for more years, but if it ends up being just two, that’s fine too.

“I want to enjoy this time with my family because I have no doubt that this is one of the best clubs in the world.”

Mac Allister is part of Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina squad for the international break and could be busy, with three friendlies scheduled in the space of seven days.

Argentina will play Bolivia (Sep 30), Burkina Faso (Oct 3) and Benin (Oct 6) in three home games which will mark Lionel Messi’s final appearances for his country.
