Everton set for huge Carabao Cup night as Newcastle handed 7,732 tickets

Everton’s Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle United already has the makings of a huge night at the Hill Dickinson after the visitors were handed an allocation of 7,732 tickets.

Everton will host Newcastle in the fourth round on Thursday, 29 October, with kick-off at 7.45pm. The winners will be through to the quarter-finals.

Newcastle handed huge Everton allocation

Newcastle’s allocation amounts to almost 15 per cent of the 52,679 capacity at the Hill Dickinson and makes for a massive travelling support on Merseyside.

Carabao Cup rules give visiting clubs the right to claim 10 per cent of tickets sold or reserved in advance, which would amount to around 5,200 at Everton’s new home. Newcastle’s 7,732 allocation therefore goes well beyond that standard entitlement.

The Newcastle United Supporters’ Club described the figure as a “fantastic allocation” and said it should make for “a great night in the Carabao Cup”.

From Everton’s point of view, there is another side to it. Giving almost 8,000 tickets to one of the best-supported clubs in the country should add considerably to the occasion, but it could also give Newcastle an advantage they would not normally have on an away day.

It also raises the question of why Everton have agreed to such a large allocation. Newcastle were entitled to around 10 per cent under competition rules, but the additional 2,000-plus seats could surely have been sold to home supporters for a fourth-round tie of this size.

There may be operational or segregation reasons behind the decision, but almost 8,000 Newcastle supporters will give the visitors a significantly bigger presence than they would normally enjoy at the Hill Dickinson. Everton will be expecting a sell-out regardless, so some supporters may reasonably wonder why more of the ground was not kept blue.

Noisy Hill Dickinson

Everton supporters will have to make plenty of noise themselves. The new stadium has already produced some impressive atmospheres, but a knockout tie under the lights with a place in the last eight at stake should feel very different.

David Moyes’s side reached the fourth round by beating Wolves 1-0 at home, with Carlos Alcaraz scoring the winner. Newcastle progressed with a 1-0 victory away to Millwall.

The clubs will then meet again only four days later, this time in the Premier League at St James’ Park on Monday, 2 November.

Everton’s move from Goodison Park inevitably meant leaving behind decades of memorable cup nights. The Hill Dickinson now has the chance to start building a few of its own.

With nearly 8,000 travelling Newcastle supporters expected to be part of it, 29 October should provide quite an atmosphere.
