Barco to sit out of Premier League this season?
As per latest news, Barco might not be included in the main **Chelsea**team. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder struggled to make an impact in the recent match against Brentford. The Blues lost the game 3-0, following which Alonso might do some course correction, as reported by Metro. Although it is not confirmed yet, Barco might be excluded from the main squad for the next few matches.
Barco joined Chelsea in August 2026 on a seven-year contract. Previously, the Argentinian was part of Strasbourg. He played for the club between 2025 and 2026. Before that, he was part of Brighton & Hove Albion from 2024 to 2025. Additionally, he also played for Sevilla under a brief loan spell.

Will Barco return to the Chelsea main squad this summer?
It’s hard to tell if Barco can bounce back. But if he proves what he’s made of then it won’t be long before he’s back in the Premier League. Barco is brilliant on the left side. He can break down the toughest defensive blocks when needed. He is capable of handling the defense as well as the midfield with equal ease. Alonso brought Barco to Stamford Bridge on priority basis. Naturally, he wouldn’t want to let him down.

The road ahead for Valentin Barco
Barco has a decent record in terms of fitness and disciplinary issues. He got an ankle injury during the fag end of the 2025-26 season. If he wants to become a big name in European football, he just needs to be consistent in his form. The Argentinian also represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, he played only one match as a substitute. Argentina were the defending champions from the 2022 edition. Once again they made it to the final stage. However, Spain beat them 1-0 to win their first World Cup title in 16 years.
Chelsea have had a mixed campaign till now. They have won two matches, drawn one, and lost two matches. Due to the unexpected loss against Brentford, the Blues are placed ninth in the League table, while Brentford have jumped to the fourth position. However, Alonso is hopeful of a better future. He wants to bring back the golden days for the Blues as their new team manager. The Blues are yearning for a Premier League title since the last decade.
For Valentin Barco, it is a tough road to a strong comeback. He needs to prove himself with every opportunity. Only then can he ensure his permanent place in the squad. Otherwise, he might follow the path of his Argentinian teammate Enzo Fernandez. The Argentinian midfielder played for the Blues between 2023 and 2026.
However, his not so impressive form in the 2025-26 season led him to consider other options. He eventually moved to Manchester City in September 2026. If Valentin Barco doesn’t want a similar fate, he needs to pull up his socks. It will be interesting to see how he marks his comeback on the field.
