Two clubs earn F grade, Hull shine as every team reviewed for start to season

Time flies when you're having fun, right? Well, not all Premier League clubs would agree...

We have made it through the first five games of the 2026/27 season and, already, there has been plenty to dissect as the table begins to take shape.

10City have been almost flawless at the start of the season with five wins from five, bagging them the only A* rating in talkSPORT's early grades

As clubs pause their league campaigns for the international break, Manchester City sit top with a 100 per cent record whilst the reigning champions Arsenal are three points behind them following their 3-0 loss at Brighton.

Top flight returnees Hull City have been the surprise package as they find themselves eighth and already dreaming of a potential European push.

Premier League titans Chelsea and Manchester United are in a spot of bother as they linger in tenth and 12th respectively.

However, it's Tottenham Hotspur who have been the laughing stock as they are winless and have scored just two goals - with both coming in the 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa - despite spending more than £300million on new players.

MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

And now that we have had our first impressions of this season's 20 competing clubs, talkSPORT.com has graded each one based on how they have performed so far...

ArsenalPosition: 2nd Grade: A

It's been 22 years since Arsenal entered a Premier League season as reigning champions and, as it stands, you wouldn't put it past them to go out and win it again.

Wins over Coventry City, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Sunderland handed them a strong start, but they strayed away from perfection during the weekend visit to Brighton.

A lack of cutting edge in the final third mixed with apparent fatigue meant Arsenal, who were fortunate to not have Declan Rice sent off late on, were deservedly beaten - but they're still in title contention.

Most read in FootballPaul Gascoigne reveals the moment he knew Spurs were 'going to struggle' amid 15-year lowLiverpool told why they would be 'crazy' to give up on £116m Florian Wirtz

Aston VillaPosition: 16th Grade: D

The summer of 2026 is not one that Villa will look back on fondly as past-season heroes such as Morgan Rogers, Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins all left for pastures new.

However, they still spent in excess of £250m on new signings and 4-0 thumping by Brighton on the opening weekend was a warning shot for the Europa League champions.

10Arsenal were heading straight for an A*, but the 3-0 defeat to Brighton has bumped them down by a grade

A 0-0 draw with Hull, on reflection, is a solid point, and they finally picked up their first win to go out of the bottom three by beating Spurs on Saturday, saving them from an even lower grade.

BournemouthPosition: 7thGrade: E

Marco Rose was always going to have big shoes to fill as the successor to Andoni Iraola, and he's had an underwhelming start to life on the south coast.

The Cherries are without a win and clean sheet in their opening five, although they have already come up against City and Liverpool.

Bournemouth have led and failed to win on four occasions and this inability to see out a result when in front has put them in a worrying position just above the relegation zone on goal difference.

BrentfordPosition: 4th Grade: A

Now in their sixth consecutive Premier League season, Brentford are thriving under Keith Andrews and boast an unbeaten record.

10Brentford are one of the Premier League's current top dogs and worthy of an A with their five-game unbeaten run

They have smashed Spurs 3-0 and entered the international break off the back of an excellent home win over Chelsea by the same scoreline, with Mamadou Sangare one of the signings of the summer.

Brentford were unlucky to miss out on European at the end of last season, but now they are already looking like a side who will be on a continental tour during the 2027/28 campaign.

BrightonPosition: 3rd Grade: A

Forget Arsenal, City or Chelsea, it's Brighton who are this season's top scorers with 16 goals and with a goal difference off 11 thanks to what has been an excellent start.

Fabian Hurzeler and co. have picked up 4-0, 5-0 and 3-0 victories over Villa, Coventry and, most impressively, Arsenal, with the 4-3 defeat at Chelsea being an anomaly of a result.

With a frontline full of goals and defence that have kept three clean sheets, the Seagulls are soaring in the Premier League top four and could be in for a historic season.

ChelseaPosition: 10thGrade: D

Attacking excitement, leaky defending and unpredictability - that's how you could describe Chelsea across their opening five matches.

Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer are a front three who look set to score plenty of goals this season - they already have 14 combined goals and assists.

However, Chelsea have been held back by an abundance of frailties in a defence that have shipped a league-high of 12 goals, with Xabi Alonso yet to see his side concede less than two goals per match.

10Not only are Brighton the Premier League top scorers, but they convincingly beat the reigning champions, so thoroughly deserve an A

Coventry CityPosition: 18thGrade: E

Before the start of the season, there was confidence in Championship winners Coventry being able to secure their top flight status, but this has now dissipated.

They scored zero goals and conceded ten across their first four, and have gone into the international break as one of numerous sides who already look destined for a relegation battle.

Had it not been for the 1-0 weekend win at Nottingham Forest, who had a late equaliser disallowed after a VAR review, they would have remained winless and goalless, as well as highly likely to go down.

Crystal PalacePosition: 15thGrade: E

Similar to Rose at Bournemouth, manager Pierre Sage arrived at Palace in the summer as the replacement for a hugely successful manager in Oliver Glasner, who won the FA Cup and Conference League at Selhurst Park.

Defeats to Everton and City were followed by a 3-2 victory at Fulham, but they have gone winless since then and, with 11 goals conceded, have the joint-second worst defence alongside Ipswich Town.

Now that Maxence Lacroix and Daniel Munoz have left the club, the Palace defence is a concern and has not been supplemented by their attack, with left-back Tyrick Mitchell their top scorer on two goals.

EvertonPosition: 7thGrade: B

Only five sides have started the campaign unbeaten, and you could argue that Everton being among those is one of the league's biggest surprises thus far.

Three clean sheets have been kept against Palace, Spurs and Ipswich, whilst a last-minute rocket from Ainsley Maitland-Niles ensured they earned a deserved point at home to United.

10Coventry have had a rude awakening on their top flight return with four defeats but, thanks to the win over Forest, they have avoided a dreaded F

Everton also have the joint-best defence with Leeds on three goals conceded, and head into the three-week break full of optimism as only the 15th-biggest summer spenders.

FulhamPosition: 19thGrade: F

Yes, it's early days, but Fulham are already looking like a side who will be well in the relegation mix this season.

Back-to-back-to-back defeats in their opening three, combined with a transfer window that seemingly lacked desire, means the Cottagers have left themselves with plenty of work to avoid going down.

Alvaro Arbeloa has managed to secure draws against Liverpool and United in their last two, but remains unconvincing at Craven Cottage as the club sit second from bottom.

Hull CityPosition: 8thGrade: A

As a newly-promoted side, Hull mightily impressed when it took three matches to concede their first goal back in the Premier League.

They couldn't have wished for a better start when they beat United 2-0 on the opening weekend, picked up a crucial win at Coventry and held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw on the road.

Although they faltered in a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday, Hull have shown that, even with the embedding of 18 new signings, you don't need to biggest and best names to compete near the top.

Ipswich TownPosition: 11thGrade: B

Promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking was a huge success for Ipswich, who were then rocked by Kieran McKenna's resignation as he opted for a break from management.

10From being tipped for relegation, to beating United and winning eight points - Hull have shone and earned an A

But in came Gary O'Neil and, despite suffering three defeats, it's been a mostly-positive start for the Tractor Boys in their bid to avoid the drop for a second time in three seasons.

Newbie Emersonn has already impressed with two league goals, and Zian Flemming was their recent hero at Selhurst Park as his late goal delivered three more crucial points in a 3-2 win.

Leeds UnitedPosition: 5thGrade: B

Months after being tipped for the sack at Leeds, Daniel Farke has got his side sitting pretty in fifth and unbeaten, with less than £100m spent in the summer.

James Trafford and Tarik Muharemovic have been two top signings at the back, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been awarded for his three league goals with another England call-up.

The 4-1 home victory over Newcastle United demonstrated just how good they can be going forward, whilst their tally of three goals conceded is a testament to their resilience in defence.

LiverpoolPosition: 6th Grade: B

Gone are the days of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson being the ever-reliable stars at Anfield, and it's Iraola who has taken the reins at a club whose title defence last season was nothing short of dismal.

Consecutive 2-2 draws with Newcastle and Forest, as well as a stalemate at home to Fulham, mean Liverpool are far from the full package, whilst £123m signing Bradley Barcola is yet to score or assist.

However, Alexander Isak has four league goals - which is already one more than his total from last season - and three clean sheets in as many past fixtures has left them in a strong and unbeaten position.

10Liverpool are unbeaten and starting to see the best of Isak but, with three draws from five, they have to settle for a B

Manchester CityPosition: 1stGrade: A*

A disciple of the legendary former City boss Pep Guardiola, Enzo Maresca had made a strong impression during the start of what he hopes to be a long-term dynasty in Manchester.

With five wins from five, which includes their controversial 1-0 victory at rivals United and 5-3 smashing of Sunderland, they have a maximum of 15 points and deserve the highest grade possible.

Erling Haaland is already the league's top scorer on five goals, Rayan Cherki remains a dazzling talent in attack, and a midfield partnership of Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez has early signs of blossoming.

Manchester UnitedPosition: 12thGrade: E

Michael Carrick was deserving of the long-term head coach job at United after guiding them to third last season, but alarm bells are already ringing with just five games played.

A midfield overhaul that saw Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos sign for a combined £85m just hasn't worked out, although £70m man Carlos Baleba is yet to play as he has just returned from injury.

Barring a hat-trick and assist against Ipswich, club captain Bruno Fernandes has underperformed and United have just one win, with draws against Everton and Fulham coming after they led.

Newcastle UnitedPosition: 9thGrade: B

Matthias Jaissle became the Newcastle head coach just 18 days before their league opener, but will be pleased with how well has started the post-Eddie Howe reign at St. James' Park.

Victory away at Spurs and a hard-fought home win over Hull are two results that have delivered encouragement - so have the signings of Amar Dedic and Nico Gonzalez, and improved form of Yoane Wissa.

10Newcastle boss Jaissle has taken a club in upheaval to a B rating within weeks - it would have been higher if it wasn't for the thumping at Leeds

The 4-1 thumping to Leeds and goal difference of zero - nine scored, nine conceded - has denied them an excellent start that followed the big sales Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Nottingham ForestPosition: 13thGrade: C

Picking up just one win before the international break is by no means a poor start for Forest, but there is still a lot to improve on.

Glasner has earned success with draws against Liverpool and Spurs, as well as a 2-1 away win at Villa, though a home defeat against Coventry is one that they will rue over the next three weeks.

On the positive side of things, Morgan Gibbs-White has returned to his very best with a goal and two assists, and £50m arrival Liam Delap has already found the target at the City Ground.

SunderlandPosition: 14thGrade: C

It was always going to be tough for Sunderland to match their start to what turned out to be a stunning season last time out, where they picked up eight points from their opening five.

Their tally so far is half of that, they have already conceded ten times and 50 per cent of their goals came in the 5-3 loss at City on Sunday.

Sunderland also have just one win but as the Premier League's lowest spenders on £60m, they remain above the relegation zone and, as it stands, unlikely to be drawn into a fight for top flight survival.

Tottenham HotspurPosition: 20thGrade: F

With two goals scored, a rock-bottom standing, no wins and a squad that Roberto De Zerbi told talkSPORT is the most 'fragile' of his career, Spurs have been an absolute embarrassment this season.

10Only one club has performed poorly enough to earn an F, and that's Spurs - a woefully embarrassing start to the season for the big spenders

10It has been a tough start to the season for De Zerbi, whose opposite number at Arsenal, Arteta, is flying

The £185m midfield pair of Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have been poor, Savio has not scored or assisted since his £85m move from City, and £52m signing Jan Paul van Hecke left Stuart Pearce stunned.

De Zerbi could already be in line to become the third Spurs boss in the past three seasons - after Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank - to steer them towards a mortifying relegation scrap.

Meanwhile, rivals are laughing as a stat emerged revealing that, since November 2024, popstar Beyoncé has had more gigs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with six than, Spurs' five league wins there.
