Mikel Arteta has reportedly agreed an improved new contract with Arsenal.
The Spaniard’s future had been the subject of months of discussions, with his existing agreement due to expire at the end of the 2026/27 season.
BBC Sport now reports that Arteta has agreed fresh terms with the Premier League champions.
It represents a major piece of long-term business for Arsenal after Arteta guided the club to their first league title in 22 years last season.
According to [BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/ckd68e40ze3jo), Arteta has agreed an improved new contract with Arsenal.
The full length and financial details of the agreement have not yet been confirmed in the information currently available.
However, the development moves the situation significantly beyond the previous stage of negotiations.
Arsenal had been working on an extension for several months, with Fabrizio Romano recently reporting that Arteta was “very, very close” to agreeing fresh terms.
Only days ago, Arteta himself insisted there was no concern over his future.
“We’re all very much aligned,” he said before Arsenal’s defeat against Brighton.
“We both have the same ambition and the same will so whenever we have time we’ll get that resolved.”
That agreement now appears to have been reached.
Arteta’s new deal follows the most successful season of his managerial career.
Arsenal won the 2025/26 Premier League title, ending a 22-year wait to be crowned champions of England.
The Gunners also reached the Champions League final as Arteta’s long-term rebuild delivered its first league championship.
His position at Arsenal has consequently strengthened considerably.
Co-chairman Josh Kroenke had already identified extending Arteta’s contract as one of the club’s priorities following the title success.
Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick also repeatedly played down any concern surrounding the manager’s future.
The latest agreement provides further stability as Arsenal attempt to build on last season rather than treat the title as the end point of their project.
Arteta’s previous Arsenal contract ran until the summer of 2027.
That had created greater attention around his future as he entered the final year of the agreement.
There was never significant public indication that Arteta wanted to leave.
Speaking before the Brighton fixture, he again stressed that both sides shared the same ambitions.
Reuters reported that Arteta and Arsenal remained aligned over an extension, with the manager confident the situation would be resolved.
The reported agreement now removes that uncertainty.
Arteta may not be the final major contract Arsenal resolve during the international break.
Declan Rice is also reportedly in line for improved terms as Arsenal continue working to protect the core of their title-winning squad.
The midfielder’s current contract runs until 2028, with reports suggesting Arsenal want to extend his stay further.
That would continue a wider strategy of securing the club’s most important figures on long-term agreements.
For now, however, completing Arteta’s new deal represents one of Arsenal’s most significant pieces of business away from the transfer market.
The manager who ended the club’s long Premier League title drought now appears set to remain in north London for the next stage of Arsenal’s development.
