Southampton have signed teenage midfielder Yunus Linton after the 17-year-old spent time on trial with Chelsea’s academy.
Linton featured three times for Chelsea’s Under-18 side during the summer but has now committed his future to the Championship club.
According to [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/40454283/chelsea-lose-youth-international-free-transfer-yunus-linton/), Southampton fought off competition from several clubs to secure the youngster.
Linton has agreed a three-year professional contract running until 2029.
He will initially join Southampton’s Under-18 squad under head coach Andrew Surman as the club continue his development.
Brentford, Monaco and Lille were also reportedly interested before Southampton won the race for his signature.
Linton developed outside the traditional academy system before attracting attention from elite clubs.
The move means Linton will not continue at Cobham after his trial period.
That distinction is important because he had not established himself as a permanent member of Chelsea’s academy before joining Southampton.
Chelsea continue to reshape their youth pathway, with the club’s leading development side now operating under the Cobham Next Gen identity.
Our permanent [Chelsea Academy guide](/chelsea-academy/) tracks the pathway from Under-18 football through to senior involvement.
Linton has previously represented England at youth level but has now been called into Morocco’s Under-17 setup ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
