Jarrad Branthwaite has revealed how a spell working with specialists in Germany helped him overcome the injury problems that disrupted his previous season with Everton.
The centre-back is back in the England squad under Thomas Tuchel after playing every minute of Everton’s Premier League campaign so far. Branthwaite has only one senior cap, won against Bosnia-Herzegovina in June 2024, but is now back in contention after a difficult spell with injuries.
Branthwaite explains Germany treatment
Speaking to The Independent, Branthwaite said he and Everton decided to take a wider look at his fitness after a series of setbacks.
“I sat down with the club after the three or four times where I was picking up the injuries. It was to look at the wider picture, look at the holistic approach of the body essentially,” he said.
That led to three or four weeks working with a team in Germany alongside the club.
“There were a lot of different things looked at like movement patterns, the brain. It was quite complex but fingers crossed it has worked,” Branthwaite added.
The repeated setbacks had started to affect him mentally as well as physically.
“It is probably the worst thing as a footballer not to be on the pitch and when it keeps happening it is mentally tough because you are sort of doubting your body and [are] going on the pitch wary of what is going to happen,” he said.
Branthwaite was managed carefully during pre-season and has since played every minute of Everton’s Premier League campaign, while David Moyes has rested him for both Carabao Cup ties.
England recall rewards strong Everton start
Branthwaite will now join Jordan Pickford and James Garner with England during the international break, with Garner added to the squad following withdrawals.
“It is a proud moment,” Branthwaite said. “The last season or so, it has been a target of mine when I’ve been out and not on the pitch to get back playing.”
The defender has not spoken to Tuchel recently but is looking forward to joining up with the squad.
“The season has started well individually and as a team and I think that has definitely helped,” he said. “I believe I am good enough to be in the England squad so hopefully I can show that.”
Moyes has previously spoken about building around Branthwaite, and keeping him fit has been important during Everton’s unbeaten start.
Branthwaite’s priority now is a simple one.
“My aim is to stay injury free and play as many games as I can and keep giving myself the best possible chance to be in the squad,” he said.
