Alan Shearer makes shock Brighton and Pascal Gross claim after Arsenal blow

Brighton’s fine vintage continues to impress the experts at the Amex Stadium this season

Premier legend Alan Shearer believes Brighton star Pascal Gross has been the best in the Premier League so far this season.

Gross, 35, has started and completed every match for the Seagulls this term with three goals and four assists in the top flight.

The German's impressive opening goal against Arsenal at the Amex Stadium last Saturday helped third placed Brighton to a 3-0 victory against the champions.

Alan Shearer ‘really impressed’

Shearer, speaking to Betfair, said: "I have been really impressed with Pascal Groß at the start of this Premier League season.

"I think there's two clubs that have been the standout at the minute other than City because City have won five from five, but you have to say Brighton and Brentford have been superb."

Brighton are third in the standings with 10 points after five matches, while Brentford are one place behind with nine points.

Shearer added: "Anyone going in against those two teams know that they're in for a battle because they can do a bit of everything because they're strong physically, but they've also got technically very good players, both teams.

"So, Brighton and Brentford have impressed me massively up to now and Pascal Groß has impressed me the most so far this season from a player perspective."

Gross surpasses expectations

Gross rejoined Brighton from Borussia Dortmund last January and his return has surpassed all expectations.

”We speak a lot about Pascal Gross,” said Hurzeler after the win against Arsenal. “In my last press conference, comparing him a little bit with a good wine — the older he gets, the better he is.

“He’s not only a player who makes his teammates better. He’s not only a player who really understands the game so well.

“I think things you can’t measure are the things we see in the daily business, on the training ground.

“By this, I mean he has the skill of creating social bonds between all the players we have.

“We have so many different nationalities, so many different generations, and he has an understanding of all these dynamics. He brings these different backgrounds together.

“I think that’s something we sometimes underestimate. We speak a lot about goals, chances and technical approaches, but in the end, the players trust each other.

“The players can rely on each other on the pitch. The players really feel connected. He’s a big driver for this and therefore he’s just very helpful for me as well.”
