Pistons reportedly give Jalen Duren $40M contract update showing complete desperation image
The Detroit Pistons are still trying to figure out the best way to go about things for the upcoming season, as they have not gotten a deal done with Jalen Duren. The two sides have been going back and forth in contract talks, and nothing has been resolved.
Duren is a big part of the Pistons organization, and they don’t want to let him go. One of the latest offers was $190 million, which Duren didn’t like.
“Per league sources, Detroit's last offer was a five-year deal in the $190 million range. Duren, who is eligible to receive a five-year, $287 million contract, is seeking at least $200 million," The Athletic's Sam Amick wrote.
The Pistons are pretty much holding him hostage since he is a restricted free agent. They had a trade offer on the table for Domantas Sabonis in exchange for Duren, but didn’t take it.
“There was a trade on the table from the Kings for Jalen Duren. They were willing to offer Domantas Sabonis to the Pistons but that’s not what the Pistons want. They want to bring Jalen Duren back and secure him on a long term deal,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel stated.
With training camp looming, there is still no real answer. However, ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed that Detroit has now offered him his desired $200 million contract.
“The Pistons and Jalen Duren are at an impasse and it's highly up in the air and questionable as to whether he will be reporting and showing up for media day in just 7 days...over the course of this offseason, his offer from the Pistons has been around the $180 to $190M over 5 years range. And that has also included incentives like weight clauses to my understanding. And that has all played a part in this as well. And over the last several weeks been kind of quiet on this front. The sides have picked up communication. And I am told right now the Pistons offer to Jalen Duren is $200M over 5 years,” Charania said.
It will be quite shocking if Duren doesn’t accept this offer, as it is the value he has wanted the entire time. If Duren doesn’t take this lucrative contract, it just shows how bad the relationship is between the two sides.
He is one of the best young centers in the game, but a bad playoff performance from last season has hurt his case for a max contract. Still, it is unclear what is next for Duren with the season not too far away.
