Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has talked a big game about wanting to have the highest-scoring offense in NFL history this season. After scoring 59 points in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers, he looked like he was standing on business.
After scoring just 3 points in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, it’s a different story altogether.
Week 2 was a disaster for Johnson and the vaunted Bears offense. Even setting aside the Caleb Williams hamstring injury and accompanying memes for a moment, things couldn’t have gone much worse in Sunday’s 9-3 defeat. Yes, the wind and rain wreaked havoc for both offenses in Chicago. But the Bears fumbled on 1st & Goal at the 1-yard line, botched a field goal attempt, and were 0-3 in the red zone.
No Bears fan could feel very good about anything that happened in Sunday’s game. But former Chicago radio host and current FS1 star Danny Parkins did his best on Monday’s First Things First, much to his co-stars’ amazement.
Parkins defended Caleb Williams over his reaction to his hamstring tweak, trying to say that it wasn’t all that uncommon to see players overreact to minor injuries. Nick Wright immediately called him out on that one.
Then he tried to shift the conversation by praising Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen for shutting down Carson Wentz, but Wright, Chris Broussard, and Kevin Wildes quickly shut it down.
But the real highlight was Danny Parkins trying to make excuses for the Bears offense by saying flights were canceled at O’Hare Airport to explain the Bears’ pathetic offensive effort on Sunday because of the adverse weather conditions. That got Nick Wright out of his seat because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“It was a tough day to score. It was 20+ mph winds; over 500 flights were canceled out of O’Hare. It was raining,” Parkins said.
“Flights were canceled out of O’Hare,” Wright exclaimed. “Was there players on them? They missed the game? Flights were canceled! 60.8 million dollars of hail damage!”
Broussard then brought up the insane temperatures in Tennessee, where a clip went viral of players’ cleats getting water poured on them so they wouldn’t melt.
“We’re seven minutes in, and we’ve heard, ‘when are we talking Dennis Allen?’ and ‘did you not see what it did to JetBlue?’ You are out of your mind,” Wright told Parkins.
There’s 15 weeks left in the season, and the Bears are still averaging 31 points per game through Week 2. And it looks like Caleb Williams will be back sooner rather than later, so Ben Johnson and company will have plenty of time to prove the critics and skeptics right or wrong. But it’s probably not a good sign that Parkins has just three fewer receiving yards than last year’s first-round draft pick Colston Loveland through two games. So there are some larger things to be concerned about.
But if the Bears don’t make it to the NFL scoring record, hopefully it doesn’t mean they will bring Chicago’s airline industry down with them.
