Jerry Jones didn’t exactly hide his excitement after the Dallas Cowboys handled the Washington Commanders in Week 2. His postgame line about an “old man with money” immediately got people wondering whether the Cowboys could make another move.
The Cowboys owner made it clear that his optimism about the roster is tied to a willingness to spend, especially with the Cowboys trying to turn its strong start into something bigger this season.

Speaking on 105.3 The FanOn, on September 22, Jones explained that his postgame comment was very much about football. He said the Cowboys have a roster he likes and that he would be willing to spend to improve it.
“We have the makings of a team here that I’m optimistic about and would work to improve it in a minute.”

Jones added that he is “looking for ways to make this year special.” That is a notable shift from simply praising the Cowboys after their 37-20 win over the Commanders. The message now is that Dallas is open to strengthening the current roster if the right opportunity appears.
The timing also makes sense. The Cowboys improved to 1-1 after Dak Prescott delivered one of his best performances of the young season, throwing four touchdown passes without an interception. The offense has shown plenty of firepower, while the defense has started to settle in after a shaky Week 1. Still, Jones knows there are areas to address. The Cowboys ran for only 66 yards against the Commanders, and the owner said the rushing attack needs to improve. The Cowboys also have to prepare for Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3, making the defense another obvious area to watch.
The Cowboys have already created additional financial flexibility this season. Recent contract restructures involving Kenny Clark, DaRon Bland, and Jake Ferguson created more than $19 million in cap space, according to ESPN. Jones has previously acknowledged that the added room could be used for a trade. He has also stated that the Cowboys are not working on a time frame here.
The Cowboys have fewer draft picks due to past trades, including the deal for offensive tackle Broderick Jones from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hence, any future pickup must fit the needs of the roster and of their plans. For now, the Cowboys are targeting the Ravens, but the 83-year-old’s comments have introduced yet another storyline about a franchise that seems ready to act.
The statement of the Cowboys’ owner is clear, should there be an opportunity to make this season memorable, Jones is ready to pay for it.
