Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams left Soldier Field on a cart Sunday with a towel over his face and a fist in the air. By Monday morning, after an MRI showed a Grade 1 hamstring strain and a positive prognosis, the sympathy had evaporated, and the jokes had taken over.
Williams went down late in Chicago’s 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, screaming loud enough that the stadium went quiet. They helped him off the field, then carted him to the locker room. He pulled the towel down long enough to pump his fist at the crowd. The scene looked like a season-ending injury. It was not.
Be honest, when you first saw video of this, you thought Johnny Fingernails here had torn his Achilles or blown out his ACL. Instead, looking back at the obvious flair for the dramatic, this is pretty embarrassing.

Coach Ben Johnson called the injury week-to-week and said Williams would likely miss some time, but the Bears did not rule him out for next Monday night against Philadelphia. That update flipped the internet from concern to comedy in a few hours.
How the Caleb Williams injury memes took over
The cart-ride clip became a template almost immediately. Users slapped captions onto the same 10 seconds of footage, and they were absolutely brutal. Now, we’re not encouraging people to make fun of anyone suffering an injury, but Williams’ dramatics forced the internet to rain down hell.

Another popular line compared the reaction to Lieutenant Dan from the same movie.
Dave Portnoy labeled Williams “the Thespian.”
Former linebacker Will Compton wrote, “You can’t scream like that and get carted off for a hamstring. You just can’t.”
And the jokes just kept coming …
A scare, then a punchline
Not everyone piled on. Former Bears lineman Kyle Long defended Williams, saying people who mocked the emotion did not understand how much the quarterback cares about the game and the city. Johnson also noted that Williams has a history of bouncing back faster than expected.
Still, the memes are not going anywhere. The cart, the towel, and the fist pump are already being reused for every minor inconvenience on X. Williams may only miss a week. The clips and the bruise to his ego will last much longer.
