The Colts moved into Kansas City territory immediately after the ensuing possession began, thanks largely to a 48-yard completion from Daniel Jones to Laquon Treadwell. A replay review overturned an initial fumble ruling on the catch, preserving Indianapolis’ possession and giving the offense an opportunity to win after reaching the Chiefs’ 17-yard line.
That opportunity disappeared after the Colts struggled to capitalize on the favorable field position. The decision to defer the opening overtime possession therefore became a major talking point because Indianapolis ultimately surrendered the final opportunity to Patrick Mahomes. After the Colts’ defense had already forced Kansas City to kick once, the Chiefs needed only a few key plays on their second possession, including a 22-yard completion to Kenneth Walker III on third-and-1, to move into position for the winning kick.
The loss was especially frustrating because Indianapolis had several chances to finish the game after controlling portions of regulation and holding a 20-17 halftime lead. With the Colts now 0-2, the overtime strategy will remain part of the discussion surrounding the defeat, particularly because a different approach could have given the offense the first opportunity to pursue the decisive touchdown.
