The international break has prevented Arsenal from immediately responding to their recent Premier League setback. The Gunners suffered an emphatic 3-0 defeat to Brighton, which saw the champions fall from top spot.
Mikel Arteta will have plenty of time to mull over any mistakes he may have made on the south coast as Arsenal are not back in action until October 10. The manager can also use this period to focus on off-field matters, with the Spanish coach reportedly agreeing to a new contract.
Arteta has been in charge of Arsenal since 2019 and is aiming to build on last season’s title triumph. The Gunners boss will hope the players away with their national teams can remain fit for when club football resumes.
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has withdrawn from the England squad and will not feature for Thomas Tuchel’s side at the start of their Nations League campaign. While Rice’s decision is reportedly due to load management, Arsenal prospect Marli Salmon has picked up an injury ahead of international duty. Here, Mirror Football looks at some of the biggest stories surrounding the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta ‘agrees new deal’
Arteta has reportedly been rewarded with a pay increase after ending Arsenal’s 22-year wait for the Premier League title. The 44-year-old will be eager to continue his recent success, having also led the club to the Champions League final last term.
BBC Sport reports that Arteta has agreed on an improved contract with the Gunners, which will see him paid more than his current £10million annual salary and £5m in bonuses. The precise length of his new deal is unknown, but it is claimed that it will take him into his 10th year in charge, meaning the contract will run until at least 2029.
The Spaniard has entered the final year of his current contract. However, Arteta was quick to dismiss any worries about his future last week.
He said: “They [the fans] don't have to worry about any of that because I want to be here. I'm extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with.”

Arsenal dealt injury blow
Arsenal starlet Marli Salmon has withdrawn from international duty due to an unspecified injury. The 17-year-old defender was named in the England U18 squad for their upcoming games against Colombia, Egypt and South Korea as part of the UEFA Friendship Cup in Switzerland.
The England squad lists state that Salmon has withdrawn through injury and been replaced by Chelsea's Gabriel Sambou in Will Antwi’s side. Salmon has yet to play for England U18s but was involved in last year's U17 World Cup.
He started Arsenal’s Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town earlier this month and was in the Champions League matchday squad against Napoli, while also featuring three times for the club’s U21 side this term. The teenager has played five first team games under Arteta since making his debut in December 2025.
