With the Premier League action parked for now, all focus is switching to the UEFA Nations League, as England prepare for their first game since their 2026 World Cup campaign. Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel faced some criticism for not calling up Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White in his squad, but he’s since joined after a number of players pulled out.
Today’s transfer rumour round-up begins at Spurs, where the north London side look to have decided not to pour a big can of petrol over their already raging barn fire. According to Football Insider, Tottenham won’t be looking to sign free agent striker Mauro Icardi, despite repeatedly being linked with the ex-Galatasaray striker since the summer transfer window closed.
The report says that the veteran forward looks more likely to head to Serie A, where he previously played for both Sampdoria and Inter. Spurs signing Icardi is said to be “not viable” as they wouldn’t be able to register him until the new year. The board are also said to be of the opinion that they have enough attacking power to see them through the season.
The 3AM Verdict: Spurs spent well over £300m on new players over the summer, but failed to sign an out and out centre-forward to provide competition for Dominic Solanke. Five games into the new season, and they’ve scored just two league goals. Icardi, at this stage of his career, would struggle in the Premier League. Tottenham should be on the lookout for an alternative in January if they continue to struggle in front of goal.

Our second story takes us to the south coast, where Brighton, fresh from their stunning win over Premier League champions Arsenal, look set to battle Aston Villa for a South American wonderkid. Team Talk report that both clubs are hot on the heels of Club Nacional prospect Mauro Coronel - a towering 18-year-old centre-back.
Brighton are thought to be “among the frontrunners” to sign the teenage talent, but Villa also look to be well in the mix, with club recruiters said to be of the opinion that he ticks plenty of boxes when it comes to the side’s requirements. It’s said that the club will “demand a significant fee” for Coronel, but there’s no indication of how much that may be.
The 3AM Verdict: Experts say that 33.5% of the football internet is now comprised of articles praising Brighton’s recruitment, so we’ll not look to add to that. What we would say is that when those Seagulls are following a trawler, you’d be best to tag along for the ride and try to snatch a juicy sardine straight from their beak.

Rounding us off, it’s back up to London, where another transfer battle could be brewing between Chelsea and Arsenal. Caught Offside claim that both clubs are keeping a close eye on Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiel, who has been lighting up the Eredivisie in the early stages of the 2026/27 campaign.
His breakthrough season at FC Utrecht last term has seen him bag a place in Feyenoord’s starting XI, and the report suggests both the Gunners and the Blues have been “watching closely”. It’s said that an offer in the region of £26m could persuade his club to sell, after Ligue 1 side Lille failed with an offer of around £15m over the summer.
The 3AM Verdict: We’ve seen countless players come to the Premier League from the Dutch top tier and completely flop, but there have been plenty of real gems too - Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber, for instance. It’s worth noting that Zechiel, 22, could make his senior international debut this month, so he’s clearly a player on the rise. At £26m, he wouldn’t be a particularly costly gamble for either side.
