Everton’s traditional first-team squad photograph has rarely required quite so little space.
The latest picture from Finch Farm features just 18 players, alongside David Moyes and members of his coaching staff. Unsurprisingly, it has caught the eye on social media.
Football Tweet described it as the “smallest squad photo ever witnessed”. Proving that would be another matter, but there is no escaping how few players are actually in the picture.
Everton’s small squad clear to see
Everton came out of the summer transfer window with only 18 senior outfield players available to Moyes, having had 22 at the end of last season.
Former Everton winger Aiden McGeady has already questioned whether such a small group can cope with a full Premier League campaign. His concerns over Everton’s lack of squad depth look particularly relevant when all of Moyes’ players are gathered together in one place.

The numbers are tightest up front, of course. Beto left during the summer, and Everton’s deadline-day move for Folarin Balogun fell through, leaving Thierno Barry as the only specialist centre-forward in the senior squad.
Moyes is already looking at ways around that, including whether Carlos Alcaraz can provide another attacking option during the international break.
None of it has stopped Everton making a strong start. Saturday’s 1-0 win over Ipswich Town took their unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions.
For now, Moyes is getting plenty from a small group. The new squad photo shows just how small.
