The Los Angeles Lakers will be entering the 2026-27 season with an extremely balanced roster. Having addressed the departure of several key rotation players with some solid signings this offseason, the Purple and Gold appear formidable. Despite this, many sources believe that the team needs more depth.
While most of these conversations have involved reinforcing the Lakers’ big man rotation, there is a consensus that Los Angeles should prioritize acquiring a starter-caliber wing. To some extent, L.A. was committed to this pursuit as well. Unfortunately, after missing out on Jonathan Kuminga, the team has been forced to start from scratch.
Currently, the Lakers have been linked with players such as P.J. Washington, De’Andre Hunter, and even Derrick Jones Jr. in trade rumors. But considering how challenging it could be for the Purple and Gold to acquire these players, we explore how L.A. could shift its gaze eastward to pursue a relatively low-cost option.

Bilal Coulibaly could be an enticing trade target for the Purple and Gold this summer. Given Washington’s improved wing rotation after drafting AJ Dybantsa, the Wizards could see more value in offloading Coulibaly’s contract for more assets. But before we can examine how this trade affects both parties, we explore the financial connotations of this deal.
Financial Outlook
This trade scenario could prove viable for both teams, with the Lakers even gaining an opportunity to shed some salary after parting with Jake LaRavia ($6.0 million) and Dalton Knecht ($4.2 million) in this deal.
The Purple and Gold currently have a total tax of $200.8 million, according to Spotrac, positioning them roughly $8.1 million below the first apron hard cap. While this is quite promising, L.A. creates enough space to absorb Bilal Coulibaly‘s $9.2 million cap hit by sending out a combined value of $10.2 million through LaRavia’s and Knecht’s contracts. By shedding $1.0 million, the Lakers would have more flexibility to upgrade their roster later in the season.
This trade would have a negligible financial impact on the Wizards, who have a total tax of $192.0 million. With an additional $1.0 million in salary from the incoming contracts of LaRavia and Knecht, Washington’s cap situation would remain virtually the same, though it would require them to offload one player before finalizing their 15-man roster.

How Does This Trade Affect Both Teams?
For all intents and purposes, this is not a blockbuster trade that would alter the direction of either franchise. Still, one could argue that the Lakers would see some drastic changes after acquiring Bilal Coulibaly.
At 22, Coulibaly is considered a young player with immense potential as a two-way threat. At 6’8″ and 200 lbs, the forward may be considered light. However, his 7’3″ wingspan and his noteworthy athleticism position him as an asset.
The Wizards’ forward showed remarkable growth in his sophomore year, hinting at greater potential in the following season. Unfortunately, the 2025-26 season was relatively underwhelming, as Coulibaly’s production took a hit, resulting in averages of 11.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
Although there was a mild regression, there was still a lot to like about the 22-year-old’s displays. His physical tools laid a solid foundation for his defensive performances. As a disruptive presence on the wings, Coulibaly certainly has the potential to be a versatile secondary defender in most scenarios.
Additionally, Coulibaly also showcased some growth as a three-point shooter after struggling from beyond the arc in his sophomore year. With shooting splits of 42.5% from the field, 31.9% from three-point range, and 74.6% from the free-throw line, Coulibaly certainly has the tools to be a more productive perimeter threat.
For the Wizards, this trade scenario has value simply because it helps them regain their second-round pick in 2029. Still, there is reason to believe both LaRavia and Knecht could be solid additions for Washington.
On paper, LaRavia is positioned as a high-value pickup. While being a capable defender and disruptor, the 24-year-old also possesses solid playmaking, rebounding, and perimeter shooting skills. Though his three-point shooting suffered in L.A. last season, posting only 32.1% shooting from deep, his averages of 8.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game on 45.9% shooting from the field were noteworthy.
What LaRavia lacks as a reliable shot-creator is typically made up for with his hustle. But in Knecht’s case, the 24-year-old possesses the potential to be an offensive spark plug.
Knecht has struggled to establish himself in the Lakers’ rotation since the failed trade with Charlotte, resulting in subpar averages of 4.2 points and 1.4 rebounds per game on 45.5% shooting from the field and 34.2% from three-point range last season. Given that both the Lakers and Knecht could benefit from parting ways, being in a new environment could trigger a resurgence in his innate knack for scoring.
Realistically, both LaRavia and Knecht would have to compete for their place on the Wizards’ roster due to their surplus of players. But considering how they could fare in a different environment, both players could become key contributors to Washington’s playoff push this season.
Why Should The Lakers Pursue Bilal Coulibaly?
As mentioned earlier, L.A. has been linked to some intriguing targets to strengthen their wing depth, with players like Toumani Camara generating some attention lately. While this is promising in theory, the Lakers’ trade assets aren’t enticing enough to formulate a convincing package for these players. In this regard, pursuing a player like Bilal Coulibaly makes much more sense.
The Wizards have drafted wing players over the last three years, with AJ Dybantsa and Kyshawn George boasting the potential to be starters in Washington’s rotation. Thus, even though Coulibaly has upside, the forward may wish for an opportunity to establish himself and secure a promising deal since he is on the verge of entering restricted free agency.
As currently constructed, the Wizards may not be able to offer him a larger role. However, given the Lakers’ need for a starting-caliber wing, L.A. may be an ideal destination for the 22-year-old to earn more playing time and increase his value.
