Former Everton star Anthony Gordon named Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as his footballing idol. Gordon completed a move to Barcelona during the summer transfer window as he swapped England for Spain.

‌

The 24-year-old left the Blues in January 2023 to join Newcastle United in a deal worth around £40 million, seeing his time at Goodison Park come to an end.

‌

During his time with Newcastle, Gordon was linked with a return to Merseyside, with Liverpool reportedly showing an interest, but no deal was able to be finalised.

‌

As a result, Gordon continued to impressed St James’ Park, which earned him his move to the Camp Nou this summer in a deal believed to be worth around £69million.

Since moving to Spain, Gordon has featured seven times for Barcelona, providing five assists, but has yet to score his first goal for the La Liga giants.

In an interview with Barcelona’s club media, Gordon was asked a series of questions, including one which was about his footballing idol.

Without hesitation, Gordon named Liverpool legend Gerrard as his choice, despite his past connections to Everton. During a previous TV appearance on Sky panel show A League of Their Own, Gordon revealed that his family are all Liverpool supporters.

"I have no family members who support Everton. None, not one. All Liverpool so it was quite strange," he said. "So I was at Liverpool and they released me at 11 and then Everton signed me.

"As long as they lost it was alright. Like if I ever scored, they were like, 'if you score great but we still want you to lose'. My family are really, really bitter Liverpool fans."

In a separate interview earlier this month with El Pais, Gordon opened up on what Barcelona manager Hansi Flick told him to convince him to move to the Camp Nou.

"Flick told me he wanted me to come, and that I fit his style and the things he likes,” Gordon said.

“When you talk to him, you realise he has a good character. He is calm and a good person. He speaks clearly, and I like that.

“I prefer honesty, even if it is harsh, and on top of that, they had the best team, so I wanted to be part of this project."

Gordon also explained why his own abilities suit Barcelona’s style of play, having enjoyed the opening months of his time with the Spanish giants.

"I feel that my intelligence as a footballer is the quality of mine that gets the least recognition,” he said. “And I think this is one of the reasons for my ability to play at Barcelona.

“Because if you are not intelligent in this team, you are lost. You have to make good decisions all the time, otherwise you will look bad.

“Intelligence is making the right decision more often than the times you do not. Maybe I should shoot at goal more or be a little less generous, but that is not in my nature. Making the right decision makes me feel satisfied."
