Javier Aguirre becomes new head coach of Liverpool midfielder

Liverpool sent several first-team players out on loan for the remainder of the season during the summer transfer window, as new head coach Andoni Iraola reshaped his squad following his appointment in June.

Harvey Elliott completed a season-long move to Valencia, seeking regular football after a difficult loan spell at Aston Villa the previous campaign.

Calvin Ramsay joined Scottish Premiership side St Mirren, while goalkeeper Armin Pecsi went out to Austrian Bundesliga club TSV Hartberg.

Centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe, signed from Austria Wien over the summer, was loaned straight back to La Liga side Levante to gain first-team experience while he works toward a UK work permit.

All four moves closed before the September 1 deadline as Iraola trimmed his options at Anfield.

Elliott’s temporary switch to Valencia has taken on fresh significance this week.

Valencia have confirmed that the club has reached an agreement with Javier Aguirre to become the new first-team coach.

The Mexican joins until the end of the current season, with the club holding an option to extend his contract for a further year.

Aguirre’s arrival ends a search that began after Valencia sacked Carlos Corberan on September 13, following a winless start to the La Liga campaign that left the club bottom of the table with one point from five matches.

Reserve-team coach Oscar Sanchez had taken interim charge in the meantime, securing the club’s first victory of the season against Alaves before a defeat to Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Valencia’s sporting director, Braulio Vazquez, had initially targeted Ernesto Valverde for the role, but the former Barcelona and Athletic Club boss turned down the approach, opening the door for Aguirre.

The 67-year-old joins Valencia on the back of a third World Cup as Mexico’s head coach, having led his country to the last 16 of the 2026 tournament.

He previously took Mexico to the same stage at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups.

Javier Aguirre has managed CA Osasuna, Atletico de Madrid, Real Zaragoza, RCD Espanyol, CD Leganes and RCD Mallorca in LaLiga during a long coaching career, alongside spells in Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Mexico.

His honours include leading Osasuna into the Champions League, winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup with Mexico in 2009 and 2025, the CONCACAF Nations League in 2024-25, the Liga title with Pachuca in 1999 and the CONCACAF Champions League with Monterrey in 2021.

He will be presented to the media at Mestalla on Monday, September 28.

For Elliott, the coaching change means a third manager in the space of a year, following his loan exit from Villa and a brief pre-season under Iraola at Anfield.

The 23-year-old joined Valencia on a loan with no purchase option, remaining under contract at Liverpool until 2028.

He has made just one appearance for his new club so far.
