Hayden Hackney has explained what David Moyes wants from him at Everton as the summer signing looks to build on an encouraging cameo against Manchester United.
The 24-year-old played the final 15 minutes at the Hill Dickinson and helped Everton fight their way back into the game, completing 87 per cent of his passes, making two key passes and setting up Tyrique George’s near-post goal.
Hackney explains Moyes’ approach
Hackney believes his ability to move Everton forward with and without the ball can give Moyes another option in midfield.
“I think I can offer different qualities to try to affect the game by passing forward and running forward with the ball.
“So, hopefully I can continue to do that and help the team as much as possible.” Speaking to Everton’s Official Matchday Programme, Hackney also revealed what has stood out since he began working with Moyes.
“I think it’s the demands on your out-of-possession work. He’s very focused on that. He then allows me to just be free, have that freedom. But he reminds me to be disciplined in my position.”
Hackney called that combination a “perfect balance”, adding that it was “what I needed”.
The Championship Player of the Season for 2025/26 arrived from boyhood club Middlesbrough during the summer and faces plenty of competition for a midfield place.
His appearance against United was brief, but two key passes and an assist in 15 minutes gave him a productive introduction at his new home.
