Chelsea injury news: Palmer, James and Caicedo latest

Chelsea’s lengthy international break has become an important recovery window for Xabi Alonso after Cole Palmer joined the club’s growing injury list.

Palmer has withdrawn from England duty with a muscle problem and will remain with Chelsea rather than joining Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Reece James, João Pedro, Moisés Caicedo, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha were already recovering from fitness issues after missing Friday’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford.

As detailed in our Brentford 3-0 Chelsea match report, Alonso’s side do not return to Premier League action until Bournemouth visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday 10 October.

Here is the latest Chelsea injury news.

Cole Palmer withdraws from England squad

Palmer is the newest addition to Chelsea’s injury list.

The 24-year-old completed the full 90 minutes against Brentford after being recalled to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the September and October Nations League fixtures.

He has since withdrawn.

Sky Sports reports that Palmer is dealing with a muscle injury.

Chelsea’s official international tracker has also been updated to confirm his withdrawal.

There has been no suggestion at this stage that the problem is serious.

Palmer will instead remain at Cobham during the break, giving him almost three weeks before Bournemouth.

We have also covered the reaction to Palmer’s England withdrawal, but Chelsea’s priority will simply be ensuring one of Alonso’s most important attackers returns fully fit.

Reece James continues recovery

James missed the Brentford defeat after suffering a small problem during the previous game against Hull City.

Alonso confirmed through Chelsea’s official channels that his captain had picked up a “little injury” and had been short in his recovery before the derby.

Chelsea have not provided a firm diagnosis or return date.

James was also absent from England’s latest squad, giving him the opportunity to continue rehabilitation at Cobham.

Bournemouth on 10 October is the obvious target, although Chelsea have not officially confirmed he will be available.

João Pedro targets Bournemouth return

João Pedro also missed Brentford after withdrawing from Brazil duty.

Our original João Pedro injury report detailed how Brazil replaced the forward after he was ruled out.

Neither Chelsea nor Brazil have publicly confirmed a specific diagnosis.

That makes reports attaching a precise injury type or recovery period worth treating cautiously.

There is, however, positive news.

Alonso said before Brentford that Chelsea expected to use the international break to get João Pedro ready for the Bournemouth game.

That makes 10 October his clearest current return target.

Moises Caicedo remains under careful management

Caicedo remains one of Chelsea’s more complicated injury situations.

The midfielder missed the opening two Premier League games with a calf problem before returning against Brighton.

He then suffered a recurrence after only 14 minutes.

Chelsea have consequently taken a more cautious approach with his rehabilitation.

Caicedo returned to training before Brentford but was still left out of the matchday squad.

Our previous Caicedo and Palestra injury update explains why Alonso has been reluctant to rush him back.

There is still no confirmed Bournemouth return date.

Given the recurrence he suffered against Brighton, Chelsea will want his next comeback to be permanent rather than another short-lived return.

Marco Palestra closing in on Chelsea debut

Palestra is still waiting to make his competitive Chelsea debut after suffering a quadriceps injury shortly before the Premier League season began.

The summer signing had moved into the final stages of his recovery before Brentford.

Alonso previously suggested that if Palestra did not make that fixture, Chelsea expected him to be available against Bournemouth.

He ultimately missed out at the Gtech Community Stadium.

That makes the international break an important final rehabilitation period for the Italian before Chelsea resume their season.

Emmanuel Emegha still awaiting Chelsea debut

Emegha is another summer arrival yet to appear competitively for Chelsea.

The striker suffered an injury during pre-season after arriving from Strasbourg and has remained unavailable.

Chelsea had hoped he could potentially return around the Brentford game, but he was again absent.

No firm comeback date has been announced.

His recovery carries additional importance while João Pedro is also working his way back, although Danny Welbeck gives Alonso another senior option through the middle.

Chelsea have three weeks before Bournemouth

Chelsea’s injury problems contributed to a heavily changed side against Brentford.

James, João Pedro, Caicedo, Palestra and Emegha were unavailable, while Palmer has now joined the list during the international break.

The timing at least works in Alonso’s favour.

Chelsea do not play again until 10 October, giving Palmer and several other senior players a significant recovery window.

The priority now is returning from the break with a healthier squad rather than rushing anyone back prematurely.
