Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom has sharply criticized his former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Kevin Durant after KD dismissed the political debate surrounding the WNBA as "noise."
Durant addressed the issue during Houston Rockets media day, praising the growth of the WNBA and saying his focus remains on basketball rather than the political arguments surrounding the league.
"All that stuff is noise, man. WNBA is flourishing," Durant said. "Look what these women are doing. Look at the money they made over the last few years. Look at the visibility of their league."
"A lot of that stuff, the politics that they bring into sports nowadays, I understand the messaging behind what they're trying to do," he continued.
"But a person like me, who just strictly cares for the purity of the sport, I do not give a f**k about none of that. I care about flourishing and pushing the league forward, and that's what's happening right now."
Kanter Freedom responded directly to Durant on social media, arguing that the debate over transgender participation in women's sports should not be dismissed as politics.
"Kevin Durant, since when did protecting women become political?" Kanter Freedom wrote.
"There is an ideology that wants to put your daughters in the same showers as biological males, your sisters in the same locker rooms as biological males, your wives in the same bathrooms as biological males.
"And here I am, putting my life on the line to fight against this evil ideology and protect future generations. Yet somehow, I'm the villain? Shame on you!
"This isn't about politics. It's about common sense, morality, and standing up for what's right."
Kanter Freedom also referenced Durant's famous 2016 decision to leave Oklahoma City for the Golden State Warriors.
"But what would you expect from someone who turned his back on Oklahoma to chase a ring?" he wrote.
"Kevin Durant, basketball doesn't define who you are. One day, the game will end, the cheers will fade, and all that will remain is the man you chose to be."
Kanter Freedom has been at center of WNBA debate
Kanter Freedom entered the debate more directly in August when he announced his intention to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, saying he identified as a woman while challenging the league's eligibility framework.
Former NBA player Royce White made a similar declaration.
Later, it was announced that neither former NBA player was eligible for the WNBA draft.
The same month, Kanter Freedom was removed from a Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever game following a verbal confrontation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud while he was sitting courtside.
