Marcus Mariota faces Seahawks as Commanders wait for Jayden Daniels answers image
The Washington Commanders know who will start at quarterback against the Seattle Seahawks. They do not yet have a firm public timeline for Jayden Daniels’ return. Coach Dan Quinn said Marcus Mariota will start while Daniels is evaluated after dislocating his elbow. Daniels underwent imaging and was due to see specialists, Quinn said Monday. That distinction matters. Washington has made a decision for Week 3, but it has not announced that Daniels’ absence will last a particular number of games.
Quinn gave Mariota an emphatic endorsement. “There’s nobody easier to rally around than him,” he said in remarks published by the Commanders.
It is a difficult week to need a new starter. Washington is 0-2 after a 37-20 loss to Dallas, and its home opener now arrives with the offense adjusting around Mariota. The temptation is to discuss everything Mariota cannot replicate from Daniels’ game. The more useful question is what Washington can run effectively with the quarterback it actually has available.
Washington cannot afford a rushed answer
Quinn said the team wants the full medical picture before drawing conclusions about Daniels’ next steps. When asked about adding a veteran backup, he said he and general manager Adam Peters had not discussed it at that point. That caution is appropriate. A dislocated elbow is serious, but an early report is not a complete recovery schedule. Assigning a return date before the club has one would create certainty that the medical process has not provided.
There are concerns elsewhere, too. Quinn said safety Nick Cross had spent the night in a hospital in Texas before being discharged Monday; he had no availability update for Sunday. Sam Cosmi was in concussion protocol, Javon Kinlaw was expected to be limited with a shoulder injury, and Brandon Coleman was on track to practice despite a finger injury. For the immediate future, the Commanders need Mariota to give the offense structure and the team a chance to win while Daniels gets evaluated properly. Quinn praised his backup’s leadership, but the endorsement will soon meet a live test against Seattle.

The season must go on
Washington’s season will not be decided by a quote from a Monday news conference. Its next game will say far more about how prepared the Commanders are to adapt. After the Commanders host the Seahawks, they will see a trip to London to take on the Indianapolis Colts, and then back home on October 11th to take on the New York Giants.
The Commanders are at the 49ers on October 19th, before they take their bye week in Week 7.
