Falcons HC reveals big Tua Tagovailoa news for Week 3 Packers matchup image
The Atlanta Falcons went through Week 1 and Week 2 with Cooper Rush as the starting quarterback and undrafted free agent Jack Strand as the backup.
Michael Penix Jr. wasn't ready to take the field in Weeks 1 or 2, but Tua Tagovailoa should've been good to go. Unfortunately, he sustained an oblique injury during practice and was out for the first two games of the season.
However, Marc Raimondi of ESPN reports that Kevin Stefanski revealed some big news about Tagovailoa for Week 3. While Penix has already been named the starter, it appears Tagovailoa is heading towards being the backup in Week 3.
Falcons HC reveals big Tua Tagovailoa news for Week 3
"Stefanski said Tua is 'trending in the right direction' to be the backup tomorrow night," Raimondi reported Wednesday.
This is some huge news for the Falcons, as instead of relying on Rush to be the backup in case Penix goes down with an injury, the Falcons will likely now be able to hand the keys over to Tagovailoa.
The continuity of a lefty quarterback behind the left-handed Penix is a nice plus, but the upside Tagovailoa brings is much greater than what Rush has shown.

While there were real concerns about Tagovailoa's production during training camp and the preseason, after what Falcons fans have seen from Rush and Strand in the first two weeks of the year, having Tagovailoa good to go is a big plus.
Tagovailoa won't be the starter in Week 3, as it's Penix who is getting the start for Thursday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers.
They've started 0-2 without Penix and Tagovailoa, and now, for a pivotal Thursday matchup to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Falcons will have both their left-handed quarterbacks good to go, so long as Tagovailoa continues to trend in the right direction.
