Shedeur Sanders’ Mother Shares Rare Look Into His Life After Deshaun Watson Silences Doubters 1

Deshaun Watson silenced his critics in Week 2, completing 24 of 30 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns in the Cleveland Browns‘ 23-19 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for Watson as a starter and paused public pressure to bench him for rookie Shedeur Sanders.

With the second-year receiver serving as the backup, his mother Pilar Sanders recently shared a glimpse of what the rookie’s week looks like away from the football field.

Pilar Sanders shares rare glimpse into Shedeur Sanders’ off-day life

Pilar shared the video on her Instagram story on September 22 with the caption, “An ‘off’ Day in the Life of.” It gave fans a quick look at what Shedeur does when he isn’t stuck in meetings at the Browns facility.

He spent his day off visiting Kirk Middle School and Caledonia Elementary in East Cleveland. Partnering with Chase Bank and Pizza Hut, he gave out 500 backpacks filled with school supplies. As News 5 reporter Camryn Justice pointed out, the kids were excited because they got to hang out with a real NFL player, on top of getting some high-quality free gear.

Shedeur said he picked East Cleveland on purpose to show the community in a positive light. He spent the afternoon high-fiving the kids, hugging them and signing autographs.

He left the students with some simple advice: “Everything’s about doing the small things right… stay the course no matter what.”

His mom posted the video the same week Watson finally found his rhythm. It accidentally put a spotlight on how Sanders is spending his time off the field while he waits for his turn to play.

Todd Monken backs Deshaun Watson as starter

The rebound performance was a necessity for Watson. The veteran missed the entire 2025 season after undergoing consecutive surgeries to repair a torn Achilles.

His return in Week 1 was underwhelming, resulting in a 34-10 blowout loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, where the offense struggled and Watson suffered five sacks. The shaky start intensified calls to bench the veteran in favor of the rookie backup.

Following the Week 2 victory, Browns coach Todd Monken praised the quarterback’s resilience, saying, “I’m happy for Deshaun. Good for him. Good for 22 months working his tail off to get to where he’s at.”

Monken added that he expects continued improvement as the quarterback gets more comfortable in the system. Watson also addressed the media, noting that the performance felt like a step in the right direction after facing heavy criticism.

“I’m just happy we got the win,” Watson said. “I’m right where I’m supposed to be. I’ll leave the journey in God’s hands and let the outcome be the outcome.”

For now, the performance secures Watson’s spot as the starter heading into the home opener against the Carolina Panthers, keeping Sanders in the backup role
