Chelsea have confirmed a major change to their ownership structure, with Todd Boehly and Mark Walter selling their stakes to Clearlake Capital. The deal gives Clearlake a complete takeover of the west London club, while Boehly will also depart from his role as chairman, as per latest news.
Clearlake takes ownership of Chelsea
As reported by Chelsea FC, Clearlake’s affiliates will take over the ownership interests held by Boehly and Walter. Swiss investor Hansjorg Wyss will remain a partner and shareholder in the group of owners.
The change gives Clearlake control of the Premier League club. It earlier held a 61.5% share**.** Boehly and Walter owned 12.83% each, while the remaining minority position was held by Wyss. Chelsea were acquired by the ownership group in 2022 for £2.5 billion, with an additional £1.75 billion investment commitment. Since then, money has gone into the men’s and women’s teams, academy, Cobham training centre and player support facilities.
The club has also put resources into medical services, youth development and its sporting operations and business goals. Despite the change in ownership, Chelsea say supporters should not expect disruption to the club’s current running. The leadership is expected to remain unchanged.
Boehly leaves chairman role after four years
Boehly’s role at Chelsea will now change significantly after he leaves the chairman’s position. He became one of the most visible figures in the club’s ownership group following the 2022 takeover.
Boehly called his time as chairman an honour and thanked the people who had worked with him during his time at Stamford Bridge. He also expressed confidence in Chelsea’s direction under Clearlake. Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano also acknowledged Boehly’s contribution. They thanked him for his work as chairman and said he would continue to be part of the club’s history.
The ownership change therefore marks the end of Boehly’s public leadership role, but Chelsea’s existing management structure will remain in place. The club has made clear that its plans for sporting and business operations will continue despite the change at the top.

Background to ownership change revealed
As reported by ESPN, Clearlake’s relationship with the other big investors had become increasingly difficult in recent years. The two sides had looked at opportunities of buying each other’s interests in 2024 before the latest agreement was reached.
ESPN also reported that Boehly and Walter will receive around £950 million for their combined stakes. The transaction puts Chelsea’s value at roughly £5 billion when debt is included. The ownership change comes four years after the consortium took control of Chelsea following the sale of the club by Roman Abramovich. Clearlake has been the majority owner throughout that period, but will now move from holding the largest stake to having full control.
On the pitch, the west London side have started the new season under Xabi Alonso and currently sit tenth in the PL points table. The club has stressed that the ownership transition will not alter its current strategy. For football operations, the message from Chelsea is that work will continue under the existing leadership while Clearlake takes charge of the ownership structure.
