Sturm Graz star targeted by Arsenal ahead of January

Mikel Arteta continues to reshape Arsenal’s squad with an eye on sustained success at both the top of the Premier League and in Europe.

The Spaniard has repeatedly stressed the importance of blending experience with emerging talent as the club looks to build a squad capable of competing on every front.

Arsenal’s recruitment team has been active in scouting networks across the continent, tracking prospects who fit the profile the club wants for both immediate impact and long-term development.

That approach now extends to Austria, where the Gunners have been paying close attention to one of the country’s most talked-about young players.

According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal continue to monitor Sturm Graz midfielder Luca Weinhandl, with sources expecting offers to arrive for the 17-year-old when the January transfer window opens.

Arsenal have already made contact with Sturm Graz to discuss the conditions of a possible deal, with scouts sent to watch Weinhandl at recent matches against Rapid Wien and LASK.

Arteta and Arsenal’s recruitment staff reportedly see the midfielder as a long-term option for the squad.

Brighton and Aston Villa are also tracking him, while interest has previously come from clubs in Germany, including VfB Stuttgart, as well as Italy and France.

Sturm Graz are not under pressure to sell, and the player has shown no urgency to leave, having turned down a move away from the club over the summer.

Born on 11 January 2009 in Styria, Weinhandl joined Sturm Graz’s academy in 2015 after starting out at SV Wildon.

He was promoted to the senior squad in 2025 and has made 15 appearances for the first team since then, scoring once.

The 1.90m midfielder has continued to feature for Sturm Graz’s senior side this season, adding to a breakthrough campaign that first brought him to wider attention.

He gained experience at continental level last season, making two Europa League appearances for Sturm Graz, totalling 152 minutes with a 72 per cent passing accuracy.

Luca Weinhandl is an established Austria youth international, with 26 caps spread across the under-15, under-16, under-17 and under-19 age groups.

He was part of the Austria squad that reached the final of the 2025 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, finishing as runners-up.

Sturm Graz are reported to value Weinhandl at around £20m, a significant fee for a player with limited senior experience but one that reflects the scale of interest building around him.

For Arsenal, the pursuit fits a broader strategy of identifying talent early, before competition drives up the price and the player’s market becomes crowded.
