Liverpool teenage winger Rio Ngumoha has closed the door on any thoughts of leaving Anfield, as per latest transfer news. The player only recently turned eighteen, has been at the centre of transfer talks with Arsenal circling for months.
Rio Ngumoha chooses Liverpool over Arsenal switch
Ngumoha has apparently settled the matter once and for all. He is choosing to commit his long-term future to Liverpool rather than entertain a move to the Emirates Stadium. As reported by TEAMTALK, the Reds’ star firmly sees his career developing on Merseyside, putting an end to weeks of rumours that had gripped supporters of both clubs.
Reaching the age of eighteen on August 29 made Ngumoha eligible to sign his first fully professional football contract. Liverpool wasted little time getting things moving. The winger has already made 35 appearances for the senior team.
Talks over a new deal have been progressing for some time. This shows how highly the coaching staff and recruitment team rate his potential. However, until the pen was actually put to paper, doubts lingered. This is given how the club had previously convinced him to leave Chelsea’s academy back in the summer of 2024, a move that was seen as controversial at the time.
Ngumoha’s 2025/26 stats at Liverpool, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Appearances Minutes Played Goals Assists
Premier League 19 551 2 1
FA Cup 4 177 0 0
EFL Cup 2 161 0 0
Champions League 4 63 0 0
Arsenal’s interest cools as contract talks accelerate
Arsenal had genuine willingness to bring Ngumoha back down to London. That was an option that appeared increasingly attractive given Mikel Arteta’s shortage of natural options on the left wing. That pursuit comes shortly after the Gunners successfully agreed a deal for Vincent Joseph, a highly rated 16 year old forward who was plucked straight out of Liverpool’s own academy setup.
For a while, it looked like a genuine three way tug of war between the Ngumoha’s ambition, loyalty, and opportunity. That picture began shifting on September 3, Ngumoha had agreed new terms in principle with Andoni Iraola’s side. The club is now rapidly moving towards a formal announcement. The new terms are a huge improvement, designed specifically to reflect the winger’s growing importance within the squad this season. That said, there’s full confidence that the player’s long-term future lies at Anfield rather than anywhere else in the Premier League.
The Reds set to keep their star youngster
Despite the growing optimism around a Liverpool renewal, reports last week suggested Arsenal had not entirely given up hope. They are said to have a new plan to try and lure him south.
Transfer journalist Pete O’Rourke said: “Obviously Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha, and the player himself, I understand, is happy at Liverpool as well and is set to get regular starts this season.” He added, “Liverpool are confident that his long-term future will be at Anfield.”
Ngumoha has started 3 of Liverpool’s seven games this term. In addition, he has also earned his first senior England call up for upcoming Nations League fixtures. Given that, it is a sign his rise shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
