Tim Cahill’s defence of The Friedkin Group hasn’t convinced everyone. Nor should it.
The former Everton midfielder told BBC Radio Merseyside that supporters should “be careful what you wish for” when discussing the club’s owners.
We covered Cahill’s comments earlier, and they’ve now brought a lengthy response from prominent Everton supporter account Citizens of Suburbia.
Cahill’s TFG comments questioned
The account took issue with several parts of Cahill’s argument, starting with the Hill Dickinson.
Cahill pointed to the stadium while discussing TFG’s ownership, but Citizens of Suburbia argued that the project was already close to completion when the Friedkins formally took control in December 2024.
That’s broadly fair, although TFG had already become financially involved. Before completing the takeover, the group loaned Everton £200m, with some of that money used to help finalise funding for the stadium.
Citizens of Suburbia also questioned Cahill’s comparisons with the Moshiri era and the ownership problems experienced elsewhere. “Why the selective benchmarking?” the account asked, arguing that Everton could instead be compared with clubs it considers better run.
The multi-club ownership situation with Roma was another part of the response. TFG owns both clubs and UEFA rules restrict the control or influence one owner can exercise over multiple clubs involved in its competitions. Citizens of Suburbia questioned what would happen if Everton and Roma qualified for the same competition.
Dan Friedkin’s distance from Everton was also raised. Moyes revealed earlier this month that he has never met or spoken to Friedkin since returning as manager in January 2025. BBC Sport also reported that Friedkin hasn’t attended an Everton home game since TFG completed its takeover.
Other points in the thread included criticism of Everton’s summer transfer business, ticket prices and the level of attention the club receives compared with Roma.
Those are the views of Citizens of Suburbia rather than conclusions we’re making, but they offer a very different assessment of TFG to the one Cahill gave.
“Loved him as a player but he has got this badly wrong,” the account concluded. Same here.
